I get a very dry mouth, maybe due to my inhaler (I rinse my mouth afterwards) or due to something else. I've been prescribed saliva replacement gels but they do not work too well. My dentist recommended chewing gum. Trouble is that my cough seems to be exascerbated by the mint or the sweeteners in the gum. Does anyone else get this ?

I don't get this myself, but have you tried non-mint flavoured gum? i wonder if its to do with the cooling effect? is this an actual thing? I dont know if we just percieve mint as cooling or it somehow does something?
just this morning I realized I might get asthma from peppermint gum!!! Coughing like crazy...cannot catch my breath...head gets stuffy...wheezing and crackling in my throat...next day I am ok again but now will test this theory by avoiding peppermint!

i eat at least 3 packs of chewing gum every day. recently i switched to Wrigleys Extra Bubblemint and ended up in an uncontrollable coughing fit for 1 hour and in pain for the rest of the day. I thought id try the same chewing gum again a few days later and the same happened after just eating 3 pieces of this gum! The following day i checked the Internet for anyone suffering from the same but you're the only close match i can find. out of the chemistry lab of chemicals listed as the ingredients i dont know what could be causing this severe reaction.
Unfortunately this thread is 7 years old and all the posters have left so I doubt you’ll get a response from them. It would be interesting to see if anyone else chips in though.

I literally eat wrigleys Bubblemint gum everyday and recently every time ive eaten a piece ive been coughing really badly. Like I thought i was ill. Thats what made me find this forum. I thought i was insane !!! I had childhood asthma but its been gone for like seven years, but I swear its back now. Holy shit
Same issue wriggley extra peppermint gum. Twice it's happened now feels like my tonsils have got something on them and I start coughing badly

I know this thread is very old, but for anyone else who has also looked this up like me. I have had many choking episodes after having 5 gum, watermelon and also the blueberry flavour. I'm guessing it's a reaction to the sweetener, as there's no mint in this one.
Hi I have hadseveral episodes now, choking can't breathe gasping for air. Scares the absolute crap out of me. It's when I eat or chew extra spearmint chewy. I will be giving it a miss going forward. I'm ok when I have the small ones, it seems to be only the ones wrapped in paper.
I've also had such a reaction to berry gum, then I had a mint one and everything was fine. Today I bought a different brand, also mint, and choking again. It's not very intense, but still scary and anxiety inducing.
Anyone else get eczema as well as asthma?
