I saw a physio a few months ago and although I thought it was quite a strange appointment (she didn't appear to do any assessments), the most useful thing I found was some of the positions she gave me to sit in when feeling bad. Although looking back they seem quite obvious, it does help to get some of the mucus up. She also went through some breathing exercises. I am currently waiting for her to give me a ring to see if I need a follow up which would be useful as I am struggling to breathe through my nose as the exercises suggest. I am not sure whether this is helpful as my appointment didn't seem to go the way I expected but I did find it useful.
Thankyou KaylaCP,
Im on lots of stuff for asthma and nebs and lots of steroids so Im hoping this might just help me a bit....lol glynis
Hi Glynis
Yes and Yes!
I have been seeing a chest physio at my local for about 3 months now and she taught me how to co troll my breathing, use diaphragmatic breathing instead of upper chest breathing and even better for me how to do postural drainage (grim I know) as I was getting soooo many chest infections from gunk sitting on my chest but now I can get it off there and am on my fist chest infection now in 3 months ( I was getting one every 3-4 weeks before).
It takes a lot of perseverance as some of the techniques (esp postural drainage) take a lot of practice but for me its been fab.
I went to the RBH for their difficult asthma protocol at the end july/early august and the physios there did some further work with me on my breathing when moving about and again, it has helped a lot.
Hope it works for you, just go with an open mind as 'every little helps'!

breathing plays a huge role in asthma, and however we've developed bad habits which don't help. This is a leaflet that you will probably get to see on 'active breathing control' tinyurl.com/o8jyb7z
The leaflet woody posted above is very good, and is what I was given by the specialist respiratory physio at Papworth, who taught me how to do it. A good physio is a gold mine when managing your breathing. They will, if appropriate, also teach things like postural drainage to help clear secretions, and look at things like nebulised saline to mobilise secretions, plus devices like acapella's which can be utilised with the active cycle of breathing technique.
