So, actually currently off pred (yay) but i know from past experience thats unlikely to last long. My issue is that off pred i can hardly do anything (even staying awake is tough) and on pred im so ridiculously hungry i can barely think, which has meant ive gained a bit of weight over the last year or so, esp on my face. I really want to try and lose a bit, and deffo want to eat a bit better even if weight loss aint an option. the trouble with pred munchies (not sure if its just me or a general thing with pred) is that i crave fatty foods too - not just a little bit, a LOT, i know its more than i do when off pred, and so i can eat as much salad as i like, i wont feel full off it, i can eat till i feel sick im so full and yet still be desperate for some sugar, enough that i'll lie awake thinking about it! ugh! stupid brain! Anyway, ive noticed that avacado (which whilst not great fat-wise, is much better than cupcakes - my current fav) will be enough to kind of make my brain feel like its getting something fatty and i can cope with the cravings/hunger a little better if ive eaten it. So was wondering, does anyone else have any good tips/tricks to help with fatty food cravings whilst on and off pred!?! and any way that particularily helps weight come off the face - cant think how to exercise the face! lol! Thanks guys!

The first thing I'd do is make sure your diet has a full range of the nutrients you need. I have found that if I load up on salad, but my body needs protein it will still be sending out the hunger signals. Similarly, if I load up on carbs and I need salad? Body is still hungry despite having eating a lot of calories.

So, if you are hungry, eat a small portion of something that is nutrionally different from what you've already eaten.

Another thing to think about is foods and nutrients that are reputed to be good for asthma. My new GP is working with me to improve my diet so it has more foods that are asthma friendly, on the theory that it can't hurt and might help. Vitamin C and omega 3 fatty acids are among the nutrients I'm trying to get more of . So maybe satisfy that fat craving with some salmon or other food high in omega 3?

Good luck! And may the pink pills stay very far away!

Have you seen ""Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead""? It's a doco about a guy that has your disease and how he ended up stopping taking Predinsone by juicing fruit and veges. He lost a lot of weight out of it too.

Disclaimer: He does say that you should be monitored by your doctor while trying this. DO NOT stop taking your meds unless your doctor says it's ok.

Hi Soph,

Your post caught my attention as it's so like my daughter who eats everything that doesn't move while she is on the pred' but when she's off them she can hardly get out of bed she's so tired. Her face too has taken a round look and is very sore to touch. Have you been tested for problems with your adrenal gland? as her Doctor mentioned this can happen but they don't seem to be in a hurry testing. We are having to wait ""months"" for a consultant.

I bought a Nutribullet to make shakes containing fruit/vege/nut/seeds and yogurt to help fill her up. However, even with a scoop of low fat protein powder her hunger has no bounds. Although, at least from a Mums' perspective I know she's getting lots of goodness in one glass.

Hope all is well

Hi !

To me things are a bit different. When I take pred just cannot eat and drop lots of weight but get my face completely swelled up? worse than anyone else! Sometimes I actually stay at home due to my terrible look it gets that bad!? thats usually on 40-30 mg once it gets below that start to feel hungry a bit and thats when I put on weight. But what I find that helps is that if I take vitamins daily and drink a glass of milk daily.

Peanut butter on brown toast is a really good one for this - the fat in the peanuts hits that craving for fatty food and then the brown bread works well at locking away hunger.

Low GI foods are usually good for slow-release energy which might help avoid cravings, and drink loads of water before any food!

Can you tell me what you mean by pred?

I reckon that you are a victim of low oxygen intake. If correct then your are likely to gain weight and also to feel tired.

Sure healthy eating is the one of the best way to overcome this issue. Is some other ways to cure this problem?
