On what basis have they put you on pred for life? Which tests did they do first? And who said it? I would be asking for a 2nd opinion especially if they have not done a couple of standard tests. Things change developments are made being told you are on pred for the rest of your life is a little dramatic.

I thought I'd be on long term pred but it just doesnt help me at all. I put on a stone in 8 weeks but have lost 8lb just dieting, its a real struggle keeping off the weight but I'm 41 and have to keep the weight off as it's hard enough keeping my lungs happy.Try eating off smaller plates of food and no snacking, it's really really hard. I had bullimia in my 20's so hubby keeps watching whats going on, and tells me if I'm not eating enough,as a foody it seems imposible. But I got into ""this is the only thing I can control at the moment"" as my life is spiraling out of control because of my asthma.

Is the pred helping? if not talk to your doc. I'm on treatment weekly for another condition in hospital and they wont let me have it when I'm on pred. I thought I'd be on pred for life but it just doesn't work for me or my Son.It's so frustrating, I dont want to put weight on, I've spent years worrying about my weight and I'm too ill to excercise.

Take care

Kate

As your body gets used to the prednisolone ur body produces less of it's own steriods. The longer ur on it more likely that ur body will need it's level supplemented with oral steriods. That's why the dr tries to reduce dose as soon as possible Kerry ann. I know it's hard but try and get ur weight down before comications set in. easier said than done. I lost weight unfortunately due to diabetes caused by steriods. My weight loss has helped my asthma. Tho the no sweets and chocolate diet ain't thAt great. .... I'm Trying to be more active as not looking forward to carrot and cellary stick diet for the munchies...

oh yeah...

and im not a massive eater, either i've not only put on weight but have had major aches and pains at the end of every course of preds (been prescribed 3 course from dec 09 till now only had 2 of them though) and this has just made my fitness level reduce to 0.

surely there must be other alternatives to preds for good? its a good medicine for fixing asthma but a good medicine for giving you other stuff too.

gussypoo...permanent diabetes?

hi gussy,

do you mean steriod diabetes?

Steriod diabetes. Been on prednisolone for ages but still need the prednisolone daily so I can breath so trying to reduce the dose. Gotta take medication for diabetes.

My daughter was put on pred for life at the age of 16 plus I.V. on her many admissions to hospital. She was lucky and didn't gain too much weight, she was on it for 13 years in total. LIZ x

i have been on 12 steroids (a day) and IV for low platelets in the past -

I found out that if I worked really hard at it - I managed to maintain my weight. I doing things like getting up at 6 in the morning, (steroids helped with that) and was having faggots and mash for breakfast - yummy. That saw me through till lunch time. I was at slimming world at the time and hence why I knew I managed to maintain through out the whole time. I was rather proud of myself because yes I really did have to work at it but I did it

Ask to see a dietician and get help now. Its distressing I know. Is it that you are always feeling hungry because I was. Perhaps there are non coated steroids because I have an odd feeling that is something to do with the red coating that does it? I don't know. A vague memory of something somewhere.

Pred for life

Hi Kerry Anne, my consultant has put me on Pred for life very recently. He said

as I was taking high dose steroids every 4 to 6 weeks it would be better if I took

low dose long term and two months on the infections/flare ups are being kept at bay

but feel like there is a constant battle going on and have a few days every week where

my chest is rubbish. Hope things improve for you. Take care. x

im only on a small dose 15mg per day but it hasnt stopped me getting captured so far im hoping my last addmission is the last one for a long time
