antiinflammatorys, are any safe?

I currently have pain in my wrist which I've had in the past, I believe an antiinflammatory would help ease the pain but I can't take ibuprofen as it triggers my asthma. Are there any other over the counter antiinflammatorys around which are safe for asthmatics? Would ibuprofen gel be safe to use?

you're probably best asking a doctor or pharmicist (or maybe AUK nurses?)

I *think* i've heard that if ibuprofen sets you off then chances are all the drugs in the same group Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs will have the same effect

Grrr, I thought this might be the case :-(

Will try ringing a pharmacist and see what they say, thank you

sorry butterfly i know it's probably not what you wanted to hear (hug) xx

Hi Butterfly, in your situation, I wouldnt risk it. Personally speaking, aspirin and ibuprofen have caused me to have significant asthma attacks, and I have never been able to get any doctor anywhere to agree to non steroidal anti inflammatories - even when in hospital, and including gels. Even when I was admitted for renal colic (stuck kidney stones) they wouldnt give me diclofenac suppositories which is the only drug which really works for renal colic. I had to be given buckets of fairly ineffective morphine instead :(

Sorry if thats not much help..

Thank you for your replies. I haven't got in touch with a pharmacist yet, will try tomorrow, but like you've said, its likely the answer is no! Its better safe than sorry I suppose. In the mean time I've been using a wheat cushion, not even bothered with paracetamol as it does nothing for the pain, and co-codamol doesn't work on me! Humf!! Mind you, I like to think of pain as a defense mechanism to avoid further injury,so no using my wrist for a bit... be nice to know what's causing it tho.

I have constant lower back pain, & have recently developed asthma; my doctor thinks from overuse of anti-inflammatories. Although I can't take NSAID tablets anymore, I am still allowed to use diclofenac or ibuprofen gel, & it doesn't seem to make my asthma symptoms worse. I'd still ask your doctor though.

I went to GP and he would have given me a Diclofenac gel, but he said that as I had asthma he'd give me an alternative, had pepper extract or something in it.

I suffer from a disorder of the jaw joint and my cons for that says that he can not give me any NSAIDs due to my asthma (including gels). However, I recently saw another cons (one of the top ones in the country) and he said that the gels were probably safe to use as very little enters the bloocstream. I haven't tried them though as I don't think it is worth the risk so I just take other painkillers and use heat therapy.
