I have tried steroid preventers but the side effects were very unplesent.

My Gp gave me a talking to for using serevent on it's own, (aparently this is a bad idea)

But my gp says there are no non steroid preventers

What are your side effects with steroid inhalers? Are there steroid preventors that you've not tried? There are lots to try. You might find one which has no side effects for you.

As Philomela and your GP say, it is not a good idea to use serevent without the steroid inhaler. Serevent is a beta agonist like ventolin so just works on the muscles, the steroid reduces the inflamation caused by other cells, so without the steroid inhaler there will be inflamation in the airways and inhalers cannot relieve this inflamation quickly. There are preventors that aren't steroid, but they are only added when steroid inhalers are used, and usually at a high dose.

I'd suggest going back to GP, a different one if you'd prefer or the asthma nurse (if there is one) at your surgery and explain your problems with the steroid inhaler, hopefully they'll find you a more suitable alternative. x

Yep, Serevent and other LABAs aren't meant to be used on their own as they can be dangerous apparently without a steroid there to deal with the underlying inflammation. Does the Serevent actually work at all for you?

What steroid preventer have you tried already? It might be you'd get on better with others. I got pretty much nowhere with Clenil and Serevent and though things are still far from perfect, Symbicort is much better for me. I am also on montelukast though which I find really good.

Might be worth giving the AUK nurses a call or send them email to discuss options then go back to GP; would be reasonable perhaps to ask to try another steroid inhaler/combined one and then montelukast if it doesn't work?
