Peak flow chart

Hi, I saw my asthma nurse for the first time on friday, and shes given me a peak flow meter and a chart where Ive to chart it morning and night.

Was wondering what its about and what an average peak flow would be for me (Im 29 female). The chart so far is up and down, highest was 460, lowest 370, is it normal for it to go up and down?

Hi,

Peak expiratory flow is explained here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_...

It's usually more variable with asthma so they'll be looking out for that - think it's classic to be lower in the morning but not everyone has that.

Re calculating your predicted best, this might help: peakflow.com/top_nav/normal...

But remember these are averages - some people's best may be lower or higher (eg people who've done a lot of sport may have a higher best value than they've been predicted). If you do it for a while you'll start to get a feel for what your best is and how it matches with how you feel - for some people it's very sensitive and an accurate predictor, for others less so.

Oh thankyou for all that, nice to know the one I take on a night is roughly as it should be :D

Lots of useful info from Philomela. It might be useful to record your peak flow if you have any symptoms too, so nurse can see what value it is when you're symptomatic or struggling to breathe the most.

i need to start monitoring my peak flow, only do it at the doctors at the moment.

my highest peak flow is 350, i'm a 21 year old female, my lowest was 10pm thursday night: 180, rang 111 to find out where I could get an inhaler so late & they ordered an ambulance.

in the ambulance I was given 1 nebulizer & then waited 1 hour before seeing a doctor who said i'll have 1 more nebuliser before leaving, i had to wait another hour for this & i was almost as bad as when i arrived.

i need to remember to order my inhalers before the get too empty next time.

X
