Hypoallergenic cotbed mattress/steam cleaner recommendations

Hi all,

My nine months old has been hospitalised 4 times in 6 weeks, so I want to make the house as allergy safe as possible for her. Can anyone recommend a good hypoallergenic cotbed mattress and a multi-purpose steam cleaner...and anything else you think I'll need!

Sorry I can't help on the mattress and steam cleaner, but for small things like soft toys and maybe even little bits of bedding, I think putting them in the freezer can also get rid of dust mites - don't know if advice has changed since then but when I was first diagnosed at 7 the asthma nurse told my mum to put all my stuffed toys in the freezer for a while!

Hope that helps, and someone can recommend a good cleaner - if not the asthma nurse adviceline might be able to help with telling you what to do.

You might want to take a look around allergyuk.org/ , they have some recommended products etc. I use silent night bedding protection (I assume they have cot versions) and a vax steamer. I'm not sure how everything compares though.

Except, that Drs recommend washing bedding at 60 degrees and the silent night bedding I have says to wash at 40. Also, last time I saw an immunologist he was very keen on Dyson's.

You might want to try sticking the fave teddy in the freezer for a few hours, kills the dust mites. There is a load of info on the site above. The helpline is for info only I think, not as good as the one here. No medical advice/info.

First of all I am truly sorry that your little one is suffering at such a young age, and I so hope they grow out of it before adulthood. Having a child with breathing problems does lead you into thinking that you should buy every hypo-allergenic product going, and often this is at great expense. There is much you can do without spending a fortune on fancy goods.

Keep the child's room warm, but regularly aired, so there isn't an opportunity for condensation to build up. Too much condensation can cause moulds to grow and this is not at all helpful. Baby is going to grow up fast and buying a fancy mattress may well make little difference, so as a cheaper alternative by a dust mite protection cover for it instead. Dustmites are killed at 60 degrees, so wash babies bedding once a week at least at this temperature. Expensive vacuum cleaners are all well and good if you have the money, but there are equally good ones on the market that have hepa filters at a fraction of the cost. Dustmites also do not like the freezer, but it is impossible to freeze every cuddly toy in the bedroom, so try and keep such toys to a minimum. There are cuddlies available that are designed for very allergic children.

A steam cleaner sounds a good idea, but if money is tight, just damp dust babies room without any added chemical cleaners, this is a very effective method of cleaning. And finally if you are worried about using cleaners but do need to use a disinfectant, there are plenty of natural alternatives for cleaning, and for disinfectant white vinegar is a good alternative.
