What shall i read on holiday?

I'm going on holiday tomorrow and everything's sorted, but don't have a book to take yet. I bet one of you lovely people is reading or has just read a good book. Any suggestions? Nothing too heavy or soppy please.

I would like to know this too - I'm going to take my new (well, secondhand) Kindle with me when I go on a holiday/work trip next week and I'm so used to browsing in the library and seeing what catches my eye that I'm out of practice at thinking of specific things to read - even though I always have a book or two on the go.

I guess it depends what you're into. I don't like romance (and sounds like you maybe don't either) but I do like crime, and recently discovered Kathryn Fox - she's quite forensic but not horrifically violent. I also enjoyed a YA/teen (but still good) book called The Glass Demon by someone whose name I can't remember. And everyone who's going to has probably read them already but I did find the Stieg Larsson books very hard to put down. I also enjoy Eva Ibbotson - a lot softer than any of these but not soppy (I don't like soppy books either). They're marketed as YA these days but were originally written for adults.

(Have to say it's very difficult as a publisher to sit on my hands here and not recommend our books lol - feel it would be against forum T&Cs. Otherwise I would with a clear conscience as I genuinely think people would enjoy them! I do even after having to read them multiple times as an editor.)

for lighthearted reading Marianne Keyes is always a safe bet.

For something a little more thought provoking i love 'The curious incident of the dog in the night time' and ' The kite runner' but they might be heavier than you are looking for for a holiday read!

Oh yes I like Marian Keyes, she writes well and can be very funny. Good holiday reading.

Amazon has squillions of free books for the kindle (including classics if you want to do a bit of re-reading) and it's worth downloading some of them to try - you can always archive them if you don't like them and you might find something that really suits you.

Autobiographies are usually worth a go (even my dyslexic son is working his way through the Michael Caine one), I adored 'A Woman of Temperament' by Lucile Duff Gordon, and got a lot of fun out of Michael Parkinson's book about guests he had on his talk show.

If you're looking for something silly and a little bit wierd, try 'Rivers of London' by Ben Aaronovitch and 'The Last Dragonslayer'(or anything else) by Jasper Fforde has me giggling all the way through.

For a mixture of history and crime try the 'Falco' series of books by Lindsey Davis. Janet Evanovich always has me falling about laughing and, of course, anything by Terry Pratchett - long may he continue!

I'm currently a massive fan of Kim Harrison and her Hollows series! Great easy read, fantasy/paranormal type stuff with witches, vampires, pixies and werewolves!

thank you all for your suggestions. i'll be having a look around the bookshop at the airport tomorrow for a few of those.

i too couldn't put down the steig larsson books and the curious incident in the night was deffo a good read.
