Hormones and Asthma

One of my trigers is hormone related and lasts about ten days at the time of the month following months of doing a pf chart for my consultant. Next time I see him and my asthma nurse we can look in to it.↲

im just wondering if their is asthma treatment and tips for it instead of the pill or HRT ?

I have a similar issue to you although it does not last as long. I used to double my preventer two days before and use more blue as an extra measure. Although this did not work for me and I still had hospital visits monthly it might help doubling your inhaler, I am now taking the pill and have less visits because of that particular trigger. Just all the other triggers to sort out lol x

Wow i didnt think there was many other people out there!

I get it to, in a way though and the only reason im thankful for having it is i have polycyctic ovaries so my monthy mary doesn always come about as often as usual! I gues thats how i noticed it was affecting my asthma!

The only treatments i no gq extra reliever though! Mine is generaly done in hospital! All the times my monthy mary has been part of a trigger ive landed in itu so i dnt realy no wats best for out in the community

Hi all,

One of my biggest triggers are my hormones, it all started when I was 30 weeks pregnant 10 years ago, I had very mild asthma before that point and they told me it would settle down but it never did. Straight after the birth I couldn't even hold my lovely baby boy because I was so breathless and they wouldn't let me go home until I could walk down the corridor but on the other hand still expected me to look after a new born baby when I couldn't even take myself to the toilet. I still keep on hoping for a miracle cure but I don't think it's going to come. I'm on the mini pill because I had a suspected blood clot on my lungs and they couldn't give me the normal pill but I don't think it helps. Since then I've developed addisons, osteoporosis,e rhinitis, thyroid problems just to name a few. I'm only 36 but I feel like 96! I'm sure a lot of you feel the same and I wonder how you get through each day because sometimes I just wish they would put me out of my misery because the pain just gets too much. I hate people who moan about stupid things when they are lucky they can breathe, sorry to rant but I feel so depressed but I think everyone is fed up of me.

Hope you get some joy with the consultant, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.xxxx

Hi, I think I get this too. I'm having an asthma flare at the moment, but my period started at it just got worse. Also, everything else I have (migraines, arthritis, and arrhythmias) get worse too. Nice isn't it? I can't take hormones either as they give me perfectly awful headaches. However I've been going for acupuncture for a while and have started taking herbs, and the herbs really seem to help. It's not quite the same, but I noticed that I'm actually taking quite a bit of calcium and magnesium. And if reading about it I noticed that their are certain supplements that are supposed to help with menstrual cramps, and others that help some with asthma. Anyways, it seems to be helping me, and I was very surprised!

hi Glynis

You are not alone. I get this each month. I have just been to see a gynaecologist and i am going to be starting a combined HRT tablet on 9th October and my respiratory consultant is hoping that it will help my asthma. For the past 2 years i have added an extra inhaler in for the 10 days when i am due my period to help. It did work at first but now it has become neccessary to change my HRT medication.

Have a chat with your medical team about your options.

Plumie

Thank you Plumie and everyone xxx

will tell my consultant when see him soon.

Blinking hormones ggrrr!!!!

im 46 now so may be the change on its way also xxx

Hormones, Asthma ? due to time in the cycle

Thanks Glynis and everyone else who has replied. Have had a eureka moment. I noticed a end of month pattern to needing prednisolone after worsening asthma this year for several months (but not last month after ENT surgery?) and again going downhill this month.

The bit I'm not sure about, it is not the week before but more like mid-cycle or week 2-3ish of a 4-5 week cycle. Also had stopped pill for some months and asthma could be worse since just before?

Bumped up for TJ x
