I have recently dreamt that I was having a really bad asthma attack, only to wake up and find that I am having one. Has anyone else had this happen to them? It is really quite odd?

yeah i've had that too

BUT

I've also had the opposite LOL - very relieving when you're dreaming you can't breathe only to wake up and find out it's not true

I've had similar dreams too, or I've dreamt that I couldn't breathe and woken up to find I was lying face down on top of a pillow or when in hossie my oxygen mask had fallen off! I've had these kind of dreams after an admission- I guess it might be due to stress??

I'm going to sound creepy when I say this I've had sort of premonition type dreams I dream I. And it comes true at some point in the weeks that follow

Not just with my asthma I once dreamt I lost my purse I lost (hAd it stolen) couple Of weeks later ! Xx

I do have dreams where I can't breathe, but I'm never sure if that's asthma playing up and therefore getting into my dreams or I'm just dreaming about it and start feeling breathless! I did once have a dream that something with wings was sitting on my chest but that was apparently not really a dream but a hypnagogic hallucination and it's not uncommon - but was SOB when woke up. (google the hallucinations - is pretty interesting and also makes it considerably less scary if you ever have one. I wasn't scared because somehow I was with it enough to know what was happening, though breathing would have been nice...)

Also on a slightly related topic I have nightmares about seeing my consultant. Sadly these are all way too realistic and are usually variations on the theme of me speaking but cons not listening and walking away, or them failing to turn up, or seeing me for 10 mins and telling me I'm fine so go away.

My first night time asthma attack happened just like that.

On a different note do any asthma meds make sleeping harder and dreams more clear/memorable, the main ones I take are Seretide, Spirva and Ventalin. Thanks Amanda

I've never had a dream where I've had a really bad asthma attack, but quite often I'll have dreams where I'm struggling with my breathing (wheezy and breathless at rest), and I really am struggling when I wake up. I guess mine aren't the same as what you're describing though, as these types of dreams happen to me when I'm unable to sleep properly or for any length of time due to struggling, so I suppose I'm not 'properly' asleep, and asthma is kind of on my mind as I'm trying to get a little sleep!

I have had this. Though last time it happened i dreamt that it was someone else in my dream having an asthma attack and not me wich was annoying because it meant i didnt have the reflex to think i needed to take my inhaler. But then you wake up any way so i suppose it doesnt make a lot of difference really.

Before waking up jist now i dreamt of cons appointment thats later today and treatment to follow (dermatology not asthma)

I had a dream that I had a rope wrapped around my chest and couldn't breathe. That was kind've scary as it made me anxious and therefore more out of breathe. At least I woke up and took my inhaler, calmed down, and then I was all okay.

happened again...I dreamt I was diving of a cliff in mexico and couldn't get back to the surface woke up in middle of asthma attack...

I've had the drowning ones too. Try to calm yourself down straight after as that will help your breathing recover from the stress of the dream.

Hope you get some good sleep soon. xx

I quite often dream that I'm coughing, or having an asthma attack and wake up and find that am actually coughing or having an attack! Suppose it's out subconscious trying to tell us to wake up!

I have a very bad tendancy to sleep through my coughing, so much so my friend has been known to shove a neb mask on my face because every effort to wake me was met with me throwing things at her and hurling abuse. Needless to say I have no recolection of this...

I did apologise though lol.

Resurrecting a rather old thread but weird experience last night...

I spent pretty much all night dreaming about discovering more and more weird new triggers for my asthma, encountering them in my dream, and feeling extremely breathless in my sleep! However, it didn't wake me up...well, at least I don't think so. I did wake up a few times but I thought that might be this annoying earache from my cold - hard to tell I guess.

Anyone else have this? I""m almost not sure if it's real, except that I have a cold which is trying to go to my chest. It's surprisingly not as bad as I thought it could be but it wouldn't surprise me that I would be breathless in my sleep, especially when I can't stay propped up. I'm just surprised - and pleased - I didn't wake up more!

I too have these weird dreams - usually that I'm choking on something then suddenly wake up to coughing fit and asthma and not being able to catch my breath :(

Natures 'self protection mechanism?'

Had a nightmare last night and remembered this thread. I dreamt that I was having an asthma attack, couldn't take my blue inhaler because I was too breathless and didn't have my spacer with me (I really didn't because I was staying with friends) and ended up in hospital. Think I woke up at that point. Wasn't having an attack, just a bit tight. Then when I went down in the morning friend asked if I was feeling ok and now I'm paranoid that I screamed or something without realising (I do often do this, or talk to my husband in my sleep).

Think it's because I had so many problems with my asthma in the hayfever season last year, and I'm worried about it happening again this year. Every time I get symptoms it sets me off worrying again, although I know it would be better just to get on with things and not think about it because it probably won't happen.
