Hey, so ive been a member for a while but never posted anything on here. Untill today, BAD DAY!
well bad week really. Been feeling really under the weather, thought i was comming down with a cold or something, had a cough for a couple of days, asthma gradually getting worse but nothing major ... untill last night, cough cough cough cough wheeze cough cough wheeze and cough a bit more, UGH. Woken up this morning with some serious aching muscles ribs, back, stomach. Took myself off to walk in centre after a HELLISH day at work ... bronchitis UGH ! Wanted to put me on steroids to help controll the asthma but im a competative swimmer so i cant take them as their banned in all competition ! Taken my first day out of training in over three years so overall not a happy bunny!
appologies for the rant, just needed to get that off my mind i think !
Hey Lindsay I have enough every day and then every morning I get up and start again the key is to find the funny things in life to keep on keeping on. Like my new great neice who is amazing, or x factor with Wagner.....!Hope you feel better soon x

Its not often ive had enough because i know im lucky to be able to have such good controll on my asthma and still be able to swim at a competative level, i think im just someone who hates not being able to do things so fancied a rant, just got to keep my head up and get back fighting fit soon,
If you are off from swimming training for any length of time it takes ages to get back to the standard you where before you where ill. If I didn't train for a couple of weeks your body really felt it when you started training again.
I don't know if the ASA have the same rules today as I last swam competitively 20+ years ago so things could have changed considerably! It used to be if you where taking steriods (legitamately, have you declared the treatment with the ASA) you where not allowed to compete for two weeks after you completed the last dose of steriods. So if you have any important competitions comming up it's worth checking. With regular drugs testing its not worth the risk...
Hope you feel better soon!
I googled for you re the difference between anabolic steroids and prednisolone
anabolic steroids are definitely banned but.......
""A woman taking birth control pills to prevent conception and a man using prednisone to treat
Crohn's disease are both taking steroids, but these are not testosterone analogues or anabolic
(growth-promoting). Therefore, they're not referred to as steroids in sport, even though they
are steroids as defined by textbook physiology and can be equally destructive to health and
the immune system when misused or used long-term.""
Edit + When the asthma nurse gave me my preventer inhaler she said there are only small traces of steroid in it.
like Malawi said `it is worth checking with the ASA`
I am a retired Swimming teacher and used to swim for Stockport so good luck in all your races
You are lucky that you are allowed to swim. Due to asthma and allergy issues I have been banned by my consultant(s) from swimming permantly. Out of interest do you find your asthma plays up more when the chlorine/chloroamine levels in the pool are high.... I always used to notice when we went to different pool's for training/competition my asthma varied quite a lot depending on the chlorine/chloroamine levels. Always used to know if I was going to have problems in the first 5-10 minutes of warming up.
PS Assumed when you said steriods in your original post you meant prednisolone...
hey guys first of all thanks for your replys (:
malawi- yes the ASA rules are still the same about having to declare it and then not being able to compete for two weeks after you have finished your course of steroids.
and yes by steroids i did mean prednisolone (obviously having a slight brainless moment when i typed my original post.
Unfortunatly had to miss out on a regional meet but .... pleased to say feeling much much better now!
and back training and all is going well *Keeps fingers crossed it stays this way*
And yes i do also find that if the chlorine levels in the pool are high i struggle more than usual and like you i usually know within the first 5 or 10 minutes if its going to be a problem, i tend to be one for doubling up on ventolin and struggling through it though as im far too competitive for my own good sometimes!
Sorry to hear about you not being able to swim any more. I cant imagine how hard that must have been to hear!
Joan uk- Thankyou for sending that link, i did check it out with the ASA just in case though and was told i couldnt compete for two weeks after completing course of pred.
Hope everyones well
Linds
x
Sorry to hear you had to miss a regional competition... I hope you did not need it for a qualifying time... Glad to hear you are feeling better
