Medic alert

At what point should I be considering get medic alert id? Not having great bucketfuls of cash hanging around and with my treatment undergoing changes all the time to try and stabilise my asthma, I don't want to get one to find that it soon needs changing. I have a lot of allergies and use epipens as well as having brittle asthma. Any advice??

Er I still have not got one. It is on my must get around to to it but still denying I am ill list along with many other things ho hummm. Do as I say not as I do and get one, wheezer is the world expert not getting things and not paying for them I am sure she will be along to tell you who qualifies for free ones.

Bex

I think they are well worth having. I have had mine checked each time ive been with paramedics and I also keep it on in hospital to as another protection to my allergies.

They are exceptionally good if you are out on your own as if you collapse, have an attack and cant talk, you wont need to as they can get all the info form medic alert.

What medic alert can and will do if you say about how things are they put the basics on the tag and then have alll the details on record when anyone calls.

I cant fit all my stuff on the bracelet and have in the past had to regulary change the records at medic alert due to med changes and new allergies and its never been a problem.

Personally I dont go anywhere without mine.

There are some cheaper ones you can get your best bet is to look at the site or ring them up.

I have also have the free version they have been very helpful with adding extras.

For anyones info I have put a thread with the details ""Medic Alert: Sponsership info"" in general forum already !!

I did it several days ago !

My free Medic alert has already saved my life once and I will not be ashamed of having to apply and beg for freebies just to keep myself alive !!

Wheezer I am full of admiration for you being able to get things you are entitled to for free. I don't have the guts/nouse/whatever to do it.

Bex

Bex i think your comments in your original post are too personal towards Wheezer and come across in a derogatory manner.

It makes it seem like you feel Donna is scavenging. I am sure you didnt mean it that way??

Actually I think she did :-P

I think we are all getting to tied up in the politics here? theres nothing wrong with getting freebies if your entitled to them or truely cant afford them but when its taken for granted its others that suffer in the process. As medic alert is a charity if more and more people get for free them that cant will suffer as they will end up paying more to cover. Dont get me wrong i live on benefits too and know how hard it is. Thats one of the reasons wuth dla is hard to get for asthma because alot of people who dint need it were claiming just because they had that diagnosis they thought it was their right and now us that genuinely need it have a trauma to get it.

Oh for goodness sake, Wheezer is on here boasting about the things she gets for free, which as she is entitled to them is fine and dandy. So why on earth should she be all sensistive when someone claims her queen of the freebies. If she does not want to be known as an expert on getting things (she is entitled to) for free then she should be be so boastful about them.

Bex

ps this post carries a huge health warning I have my annual chest infection a raging temp and just had my 1st home GP visit (at his request) for 13 years!

Ditto Bex xxxxx

get well soon xxx

big hugs and bug busting coming your way xx

Please can we stop this.

Can we have some respect for peoples feelings and if you have something personal to say then keep it private.

Gloomyeeyor has posted and yet again her post has been turned into a personal debate.

Everyone is ill on here to varibale levels but it is no exscuse for personal attacks on anyone no matter how bad you are.

If you cant be kind and helpful and constructive for whatever reason then may be it is better that you post on another day.

Meaning what Speedy? Whilst everyone is busy worrying about Wheezers feelings did anyone of those well meaning people who have ""so kindly"" sent PM's flying around consider mine, did they heck. I have said I don't know what the fuss is about if Wheezer does not wish to be known as able to get things for free then she should not post about it.

Sorry but I am sick and fed up of people reading things into posts that are not there.

Bex

dont want to sound stupid here but im dont even know what medic alert is...I dont suffer from brittle asthma..in fact not even sure what brittle asthma is..as far as im concerned im just asthmatic..have high bp and would really appreciate if someone could explain what medic alert is and if it is worth making further enquiries into

It is a registered charity that holds all of your medical details in case of emergency. You wear a medic alert tag or jewellary and medical professionals are trained to look for it. The tag contains basic info on your medical conditions - allergies etc and there is a contact number that they can use to establish a fuller history on you. If you are alone and extremely unwell you don't need to be able to explain your condition - it can be found out.

To completley bypass previous :)

I have an SOS talisman necklace which has a long strip of folded paper inside it with all my medical detail next of kin etc.You can get sports type ones and bracelets too. I can easily update the paper as things keep changing and it has been noticed and read by many paramedics/A+E docs- works for me!

talisman sos

I also wear a talisman sos bracelet. A quick search will find the web site.

The strip of paper requires tiny writing which with pred shakes i could not manage so I scanned the strip into my computer and typed in the info. It as also easy to update that way. The only time I ever take it off is to get in the shower otherwise I wear it 24/7.

As well as that in the car, in my hadbag etc, etc, etc I carry a small laminated print out of medical and personal details which paramedics and hosp find very useful. Again that is easily updated each time medication changes or ther is another hosp admition to note.

I have brittle asthma and for scottishmum - it is a type of asthma where if your peak flow starts to drop it can drop very suddenly to just about nil so if an attack starts to go brittle, ie pf drops suddenly by the time the paramedics get there you may not be able to talk or may be unconscious so any way of ensuring they get vital info is important.
