CATS

Are all asthmatics allergic to Cats? i'm thinking of getting a cat and most people have asked me how they affect my asthma. i have been around my relatives cats lots with no problems and as far as i'm aware cats don't affect my asthma so not sure what to do.

erm .. no

you can be tested to see if your allergic to the through skin prick tests i would get that done before i got a cat! just incase lungs dont agree and u get attached!!

Persian cats seem to be the worst for most people. But be aware short hair doesn't necessarily mean less likely to react.

i'm not. did blood tests and am allergic to dogs but not cats.

I had an off the scale reaction to both skin pricks and RAST for cats having been a cat owner had them all my life and had no symptoms I could put down to being near/with them. Bearing in mind what a state I was in when I was tested I got rid of my beloved cats just in case they were responsible for sudden and dramatic change in my ashtma. I have to say I have noticed absolutly no difference. 2 of my favourites were sent on a prolonged holiday to family and when I visit them again no reaction. I am thinking of bringing them back home we all miss them a lot. I must remember to talk to the team and see what they think Prof Durham said on Firday that some people can have off the scale reactions and have no symptoms so it is very tempting.

Black cats are supposed to be more allergenic too though I've no idea how! Or a bald one? I think they might be Rex's. Although that won't make much difference will it? It is the saliva not the fur as I understand it.

On a lighter note, and if you've got a couple of grand sitting around doing nothing, hasn't someone in the USA bred an anti-allergy cat now? I understand there is a waiting list and they are ridiculously expensive!!! But, hey, it's an option;~)

no not all asthmatics are allergic to cats, wonder why black cats are worse than others though, our black cat is as dippy as anything, he sits ouside my room crying.
