I was reading a very small article in the ""Woman's Own"" this week and it said research had shown beefburgers ( fast food) was bad for asthma and stopped their reliever medication from working. Has anyone here experienced this. I don't know where the the research was from as it was literally only a couple of lines.
take care and hope everyone is as well as they can be in this unsettled weather. LIZ x
That is bad news! George and I love beefburgers, altho we only have them now and again. I dont think knowing this will stop me eating them..
Did it say what it was that was causing this in the beefburgers?
A bit vague is it not? Where is the research?
I can see how the wheat in a burger bun can cause problems and many burgers now have wheat in them so the wheat/gluten is a known problem for asthmatics.
Otherwise, how would a burger differ from a slice of bacon?
I have become a great believer in bunless burgers. Do not use a bread bun but get an iceberg lettuce leaf, put some sliced onion and tomato in the centre, also some cheese if you like and then place the burger on top. Add sauce or relish as you so wish and then wrap the lettuce leaf around the burger and eat.
Because you are eating an iceberg lettuce leaf you get the crispness and texture which means you do not miss the bread.
OK, I have google the research and it is basically putting it down to eating burgers all the time being a bad diet which is DOH! That is no different to saying that kids who eat burgers all the time end up obese. The research says that children in richer parts of the world who ate fish or in poor parts who ate mainly veg were healthier than kids eating burgers.
So, IMPO, that is just a nonsense report as if you eat a burger now and then as part of a healthy diet it can surely do little harm. In fact, if you eat a burger made with good quality meat ever now and then it probably will do you some good.
dont like beefburgers anyway all the grease eww, veg burgers or chicken ones are best
I know I have a problem with fatty greasy foods as it makes me cough I think it is something to do with it irritating my airways
There was an article in the June 2010 issue of Thorax based on an observational study of diet in children with asthma and allergies, discussed here: medpagetoday.com/AllergyImm...
From the MedPageToday article discussion:
""Eating a Mediterranean diet -- one high in fruits, fish, and vegetables and low in saturated fat -- is associated with a reduced likelihood of asthma in children, a large observational study reaffirmed.
Overall, choosing foods increasingly similar to a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower prevalence of both wheeze and asthma (P=0.03 for both trends), Gabriele Nagel, MD, MPH, of Ulm University in Germany, and colleagues reported in the June issue of Thorax.
In contrast, children who ate burgers at least three times a week had increased odds of having asthma (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.87).
""Fast food is rich in industrially hydrogenated vegetable fats such as margarine and meat from ruminant animals which are dietary sources of trans-fatty acids,"" the researchers noted. ""There is some evidence that dietary intake of trans-fatty acids is associated with asthma and atopy.""
both articles discuss the limitations of such observational studies as well as the interesting questions raised.
Beefburgers bad for people with Asthma.
I had another look at the article in the magazine and it's fatty foods such as pizza and beefburgers. the fat seemingly causes the bronchioles to swell and and works against reliever medication. As I said before not sure where they got their info. from. Keep well. LIZ x x
