Morning Dip

Hi everyone

Breathlessness in the early morning is a big problem for me, and I know a lot of others suffer with this as well. My cons said this is not consistent with asthma, which really surprised me. I was just wondering if there was ANYTHING that helps with this! Thanks

Brynne

Early Morning dips are classic of asthma.

I get them around 3 to 5AM!!

Kate

Me too.

I don't need or use an alarm clock, just know exactly what the time is when I wake up SOB. In fact it's more or less on the hour every hour from about 2.00am.

Brynne, as Kate says, breathlessness is a classic symptom of asthma. My new chest con explained that when the small airways where gas exchange takes place get inflammed it causes the classic SOB. When the large airways are inflammed you get the obvious wheezing sound. Must still be room for the air/oxygen to get through.

Problem is if the large airways are inflammed then any inhaler type medication will not get down into the smaller airways hence the use of systemic drugs like pred to reduce the inflammation in the small airways via blood circulation.

But you need to get some more medication or a review if you are waking up so much.

Take a lot of care.

I used to get dreadful morning dips, would wake anytime from about 3am onwards. However mine was part asthma and part sleep apanae (? sp) - now that I have cpap i find that I am ok until about 2 hours after I wake and then get the dips then but they are not as bad as they used to be. My cons says this is because by the time i dip i have had my meds and they are kicking in slightly.

But if you are getting bad morning dips u need to get your meds reviewed.

Hello,

I think with my asthma the early morning dips are the biggest problem for me. During the day time I find it hard to separate my asthma from my underlying lung disease and muscle dysfunction but at night it becomes clear that the asthma is a big problem. I've had early morning dips for about 4 years, these past couple of years have been the worst. I have an attack at around 2am just as I'm going to bed but that one isn't that nasty though. I then wake up at about 6am with a dry cough which really kicks things off, during this attack my sats can drop down to the mid to low 80s, after a few nebs I'm fine again so thats kind of how I know its my asthma because mine responds well to nebulisers. Thank god for nebs through oxygen!

Think you need a different doc hunny!! is he an asthma specialist or general chest doc? coz as with the other replies on here its a classic sign of asthma and if you getting it regularlly its a sign that your asthma isnt well controlled? If you look on th egeneral site here it will tell you.

Good luck

Heres to more sleepless nites

Wheezyab,

He is general chest doc, but he is supposedly THE chest doc in this city. Thanks for all your replies, I guess I'll just have to see my GP again,

Hi brynne, try and get yourself referred to an asthma specialist you may need to push but just remember we deserve and have a right to the best care available, asthma is bad enough to cope with anyway but worse if you not got a good cons.

Hope your successful

Hi Brynne

I too get breathlessness and PF dips anything between 2 and 5.30 in the morning. It was only 200 this morn! When my chest is good i usually wake needing a neb about 3ish and then about 6/7 but when it is bad it can be every couple of hours gasping and really tight chest. I do have a problem in the night anyway and my con is not sure why i wake gasping every night seeing as how im on full whack med.

You def need to change yr doc as everyone else says that this IS classic to asthma.

Pink fluffy hugs.

Kym

i get dips too but they are later than you guys about 6.00 are thiese counted as morning dips ?

cheers

hannah
