low body temperature

Does anyone have a problm with this?

Since i have been under the community amtron i had been having my temp taken nearly daily and its contantly low : 35.5 c and if i have an infection i start to feel feverish by the time my temp is up to 36.4. While this isnt a prob for me at home as GP and nurse are aware when i am costafied then never seem to accept that i am running a temp when it is lower than the normal 37 which then in turn makes it seem as if im exaggerating and despite my nurse speaking to the ocsta team it has fallen on deaf ears.

Does anyone else have this problem or any ideas why my temp is so low, i do feel the cold very easily , have had my thyroid checked and thats fine, me temp will often drop to 34.5 when im feeling cold too!! any thoughts?

Hi hops,

I always used to have a low baseline temperature as well, often about 35.5 - although that seems to have changed in the last few months since my last long admission. I would often feel feverish at about 36.5, but it was never really a problem, because I always seemed to have other signs of infection too if I had something going on.

I don't know why this happens, if you don't have a thyroid problem. I think, as with any physiological variable, there is always going to be some variation around the norm. I had a patient once who consistently ran a temperature of about 38, and after extensive investigation, we concluded that there was nothing wrong with them and it was just normal for them.

Hope this helps

Em

When i have an infec i do have other signs but for me the temp going up is always the first esp with chest infec before i get gunky and often the drs dont accept it until they do bloods and find things are haywire.

Hi

I too have a low basal body temperature - i only discovered it when i was 'charting' my cycle - i did this for 2-3 years and finally realised why after years of telling everyone i didn't feel well - they'd put their hand on my forehead and say - no temperature you're fine!!!! My basal temp is about 34.7 - 35.5. My son who is 3 1/2 also has a low body temp - although i always tell everyone this and that mines the same no-one takes any notice.

Surely if your having your temp taken daily then dr's can see that your 'normal' temp is lower than average and therefore your 'fever threshold' is going to be lower.

I also feel the cold and have been checked for underactive thyroid which was ok. I'm quite thin and have relitivey low body fat - i've always presumed thats why i feel the cold - I do know that when i got pregnant my temp went up and stayed up - it was horrible i felt so hot for months and months (well 9 months).

So sorry no help with explanation as to why - but i don't think it's that uncommon

Hope you get it sorted and they listen to you.

ditto

hi

presumably you have a thermometer that is calibrated, especially if an ear one and has the correct covers! these can affect your readings, orals vary if mouth cold/hot

my temp always runs like ems pt on the high side near 38, as difficult, cause drs always say have infec wen know dont!

Yup all thermemteres are ok, my community matron carried both a digital and an tympanic thermometer and both readings are very similar and tie in with mine and the GP ones too.

Unfortunately i cant blame low body weight as im overwieght.

My GP is fine with realising that im running a temp at 36.5 the prob comes once im in hospital, it takes them alot longer and i need to be showing a few symptoms b4 they act by which time my astma needs alot of help to recover.
