Is it possible to have symptoms ( coughing...) and a clear chest and be having a asthma attack?

if the inhaler doesn't improve symptoms?

by clear chest, do you mean no audible or feeeling of wheezing, or no audible spasm when the dr listens with a stethoscope?

anyway, im no expert, but if you feel that you have asthma symptoms, and they dont respond to medication, this could be the sign of quite a serious attack.

on the other hand, it could indicate other things, such as over exercising, being rather unfit, for example.

hope this helps; you could try ringing the asthma uk adviceline.

intersting I just had a cold, which cleared up, but the cough progressed to the point last night when it was difficult to breath, the blue inhaler did not improve condition, went to the doctor today, who said my chest was clear no wheeze(I have never had a wheeze), although cough persists, so anti biotics for cough and singular and back on the brown inhaler, its been 2 years since I had sysmptons like this, I'm curious what causes it, but haven't worked it out yet

may be the weather/ humidity?

Clear chest was very audible and feeling of wheeze, but no audible spasm when the dr listens with a stethoscope.

Also coughing so much talking was not possible

both of these not shifted by 20 + puffs of blue inhaler

Sounds very like my asthma. Coughing was my most common symptom and did not respond to ventolin. My resp consultant put me on Spiriva in addition to my Symbisort which worked like magic. My asthma has been well controlled on these two inhalers apart from when I get infections. When I have minor asthma symptoms my ventolin now helps. When I have a real flare up I do cough but no more than you would expect with an chest infection and coughing is not a problem day to day.

Hope that helps

Anguilla

Sounds a lot like mine, Anguilla (and therefore probably tyber28's). Never responded well to Ventolin to start with, it only started doing things when I was put on montelukast. Now the Ventolin works better (though still not brilliantly) and have just started Symbicort (again) so hope that works (this time) - and also that if it does the Ventolin works better when I need it.

Coughing has often been my main symptom and I generally have a clear chest (feel sometimes like I should stick a sign on my back when I go saying 'I DON'T WHEEZE BUT I AM SHORT OF BREATH' lol)

I used to have a cough but no wheeze but more recently have developed into being really wheezy (lovely!)

I'd recommend you ring the AUK advice line. They have been so helpful to me there.

I think some doctors don't understand that you can not wheeze but still be having a serious attack (I've been told that some people just don't wheeze for whatever reason) and so you shouldn't underestimate it.

A doctor at the walk in centre almost refused to give me pred - gave it very reluctantly - when I went in short of breath but with 'not much of a wheeze' to quote him, but when I saw my consultant and asked him about this, and described my symptoms and peak flow, he said he would definitely have given it to me.

Many Thanks

I will try the advice line.

Maybe my local ED should have a not all people with asthma wheeze notice,

just to remind them.

Also thanks for helping me realize there are more options than just salbutamol
