flu and swine flu

Are the flu and swine flu jabs been given together as one jab or given at a different time? I know you need a second swine flu jab.I live in staffordshire ,anyone had theirs yet?

Just though I would post - I'm not sure if ppl know or not but on Wednesday night at 21.00hrs not sure if it's bbc1 or itv 3 there is a programe on about swine flu,the effects of it and also covers the jabs that are due to come out and who gets it and who don't.

Looks very intresting but not sure if it will make people more paranoid then what they already are!

Read somewhere a little while ago that they were going to try and give the first swine flu dose along with the seasonal jab but I doubt it will matter. Considering the seasonal vaccine should be available before the swine flu vaccine I'm guessing most people will end up getting that before any swine flu vaccine

I live in staffordshire too! My docotors have advertised for the starting of there flu jabs, but it didnnt say anything about swine flu vacine too... So I'm assuming they will be done seperatley

Hey I don't think they have the swine flu available yet, its definately seasonal flu jabs first (my doctors have already started them..)

I think as soon as it is announced we will hear on this website anyway.

I had my seasonal 'flu jab today. I asked about the swine 'flu jab and was told it isn't ready yet and the powers that be still haven't decided who the at risk groups will be, whether it will be the same as for the seasonal 'flu or not.

My seasonal flu jab letter arrived from my GP surgery this week and stated very clearly that it's not the H1N1 vaccination. That will clearly come later.

The Swine 'flu vaccine is different from the normal seasonal 'flu vaccine. The seasonal 'flu vaccine is starting to be given around now, whereas we're not expecting to have the Swine 'flu vaccine until October. You can have both, either given together (in opposite arms) or separately.

Have just joined today because I wanted to ask about this. I have had the seasonal flu jab for the last ten years. As my mum had received the letter for over 65s from the surgery asking her to book, I called and asked if I should book too, but they said I am not going to get it this year as I am not on the right kind of inhaler. My steroid inhaler hasn't changed and I feel my asthma has been worse this year. Has anyone else heard of this change?

from what I have been told is that if you have asthma your doc will give you the flu jab,if you are worried about it,best to ring up and ask about it.

Had mine already and been on problems.

Thanks for replying Glynis and sorry for hijacking your thread :o). Was a bit put off by the person I spoke to this morning but will try and pursue, or if not feeling feisty enough, consider the private option. She was definite that it is now available only for people on specific inhalers, so I was just wondering if anyone could explain. Was already concerned about swine flu but sure that they would handle it - didn't expect to have to fight for seasonal flu!

I've always thought that anyone with asthma was entitled to a free 'flu jab, but I've just looked on the NHS website (see: tinyurl.com/y898cag) and it does say:

""The seasonal flu jab is offered free of charge to anyone over the age of six months with the following medical conditions:

•chronic (long-term) respiratory disease, such as severe asthma, COPD or bronchitis, ... (then lists other conditions)""

This is the first time I've seen it stipulated that asthma must be severe. Given that the terms are sometimes used rather loosely, this is quite concerning as some people who need it might not get it.

I phoned last week to enquire about the seasonal one, and said I had asthma, no other questions asked, just put my name down. Go in on Thursday to get stabbed. They don't know when they'll get the swine flu one.

Read a report from Canada last week, apparently the seasonal flu jab makes you more vulnerable to catching swine flu, can't win can we.

Strictly speaking, to receive the 'flu jab people with asthma should be on a steroid inhaler for at least three months of the year. Realistically, I think everyone with asthma is on our recall register for the 'flu jab. There is nothing in the guidance about specific makes/ingredients of inhalers beyond this.

Seasonal 'flu jabs abound now, but we're still waiting for the Swine 'flu jab, which we are told should be arriving mid-late October.

Oh, and regarding ""at-risk"" groups for Swine 'flu - same as the ""at risk"" groups for the seasonal 'flu jab, except for the fact that the over-65s aren't included (there seems to be some kind of accrued immunity amongst this age group from having been exposed to so many different strains of viruses/flus over the years). So, yes - people with asthma, particularly those under the age of 65, will be amongst the first to be called up for vaccination.

I have been tagged as high priority for swine flu my community matron check that the other day. Other half had his flu jab yesterday and was told he was also tagged but they did not have the swine flu vaccine yet. I understand it is 2 different jabs and I have no idea if you can have the 2 together I would have thought so. Slightly weird my son who is almost 16 is not tagged yet he has multipul health problems which are auto immune related and I would have thought would have been on the must have list.

I currently have swine flu (h1n1v) does that mean I will not need the jab now when it comes out?

Also- regarding the tami flu, is it necessary to take as it doesn't actually cure it?
