Well now I have underactive thyroid to add to the medical list, in some ways Im glad that I have an answer to some of my recent weird symptoms as I though I was loosing the plot !
On the positive side... at least I now get all my prescriptions for free!! stupid isnt it that you get it with throid but not with asthma!
Having read some of the recent posts on this forum, may I congratulate your doc for being on the ball and identifying problem. You're getting somewhere. Very best wishes and yay! free prescriptions for that at least.
Wishing the same went for everyone else re answers and free scripts.
thanks, she was sooo on the ball, I went thinking I was going thro early menopause! but she said she'd do the whole lot of blood tests just incase and guess that was a good call, At least i can tell mt hubby and son that im not going crazy when I loose the plot over small things now!
Ithink I get free prescriptions for all meds now not just thyroid tablets, cant understand it though!
I have that to... wondering if connected to high dose steriods also got realt low b12 caused by lansprozole I was told!
Me too!
Hi Snowy, I have an underactive thyroid too. I think I am on the right dose of meds but do still get some slight symptoms. Do you get very tired? I do. Anyway here to compare notes with if you want anytime! Take care.

what are the symptoms of underactive thyroid? Just i've been struggling to loose any weight despite running 3 times a week, am exhausted nearly falling asleep in an afternoon despite getting 8 hours sleep and have been on a short fuse, snapping all the time and getting annoyed at the slightest thing. I was tested 9 months or so ago but at the time i was only feeling tired. Just wondered if i should go back to docs or not.
hi - my underactive thyroid wasnt diagnosed for many years. i had lots of symptoms the main one was that i would literally fall asleep anytime even during conversations. it was border line for years and then after putting 4stone on and spending my life asleep the blood tests showed the levels were ridiculous-hence the diagnosis. i have to have my medication changed all of the time as it changes and i still have so many symptoms that spoil my day to day life - from weight gain, hard to lose weight, dry skin, tiredness, aching, sleeping, needing to sleep lol, depression and a voice that could make money on an adult chat line. it is not a nice illness and unfortunately my thyroid doesnt work at all so i can just look forward to more of the same.
i really hope that yours was diagnosed early and that you know to have regular blood tests to prevent any awful side effects. it is good though not having to pay prescription charges x
This post has been very interesting read especially the last reply as I can relate to alot of those symptoms. I'm sure its not an im probably just bein paranoid over a freaky coincidence but it is interesting to read. i wish everyone dealing with it the best of luck!
thanks all...
It seems interesting that others are the same, I wonder if there is a connection with asthma or not?
My symptoms seems to come gradually which is why it crept up on me, I seemed to always be tired wether I got 6 or 16 hours sleep I woke up tired!, very unusually dry and thinning hair, dry skin, brittle nails, always going through bouts of constipation (thought it was the steroids tho!), muscle weakness and cramps, always cold and very emotional and short fused which I guess was the main symptom that I went to seek advice for as I went from being a placid person to loosing it over nothing..
I only started meds this week and have to have blood tests every 6 weeks so they can get the dose right so think it might be sometime before I notice any difference, but fingers crossed it can now help!
Snowy
Wow...thanks for sharing, i hope the meds work for you. I can quite honestly say i can relate too all of those the sleep an hair is buggin me atm but it'll probably just get blamed on my other meds. But yeah no matter how much sleep i get lately it still takes almost an hour of battling with the alarm clock before i can even manage to keep my eyes open long enough to contemplate getting up. Hmmmm...Worth a chat with the doc perhaps...tho like i said, im probably just bein paranoid lol.
wow yeah me too, thinning hair, i've always had thick hair until now. And muscle fatigue and pins & needles, plus my resting heart rate is down to 50 bpm and i can't even feel my pulse!! I.m sure its prob nothing like you said cazzy but interesting and prob worth a trip to gp. Wonder if there is a link to asthma?
if I was you both I would ask your GP, at the end of the day if they feel that it does not warrent the blood test then they wont do it, but if you have got it, its better to know
Dont do what I did and leave it and leave it... I have a really really good relationship with my GP but everytime I think about mentioning it or get around to booking an appt my asthma flared up so the whole appt was then about that, until I decided enough was enough and asked her and here I am now but at least I know what it is and it can be helped now!
Snowy
i have much thinner hair now due to my thyroid. there was a previous post about hair loss to which i said this. its horrible but the more you worry the worse it can get as stress can also cause hair loss. the worst symptom for me is the tiredness. how do others cope with this?
google thyroid and buteyko
there is a good bit of info out there on thyroid problems and buteyko if you google it.
There can be hidden links from improvements in breathing and many seemingly unconnected symptoms and illnesses many of them serious.
When i changed my breathing habit i noticed a particular improvement in my temper and patience...may be of help.
There are mild exercises that do help people with severe asthma/other conditions.
Have a look at the BBC documentary from 1998 on buteyko study in Scotland. Amazing results with three very severe asthmatics plus one average asthmatic, a teenager) in 90mins x 5 consecutive days instruction.
i was always under the impression that when you were given the correct medication that all of the problems associated with an underactive thyroid would magically go - ha thats a laugh. my levels change constantly, i cant shift the weight, my hair still falls out and is dry as is my skin and im still as tired etc...i thought it was just me until i read up about it on the net-so im thankful for the info out there x
this is wierd, i was told i was anaemic last year which i thought the reason why i was always tired, but my blood results were fine, I am always feeling tired and weak, my hair is thinning and seem to be putting on a bit of weight, but my doctor wont even do anything about my exsiting problems so have no hope with this
I have to say that I find it very disturbing the stories people tell about their GP's, I have nothing but praise for mine, like with this I expected to be told its nothing and dont be silly but instead all the tests under the sun, I know she did comment that if it wasnt for my asthma then I would never see her as I am not normally ill with other stuff (thank god as the asthma take up enof of her time each year!) so she said for me to see her about it, it must be affecting me quite badly.
I wish all GPs were the same for all of you...
Snowy
well snowy some people do have quite bad doctors, i have had two bad ones since moving to a new town
