I have had asthma since I was 4, had it so rarely as I grew up then only with an known allergy.Couple of years ago had chest infection & it was very bad. Now I am laid up with OP fractures it is awful, can’t breathe, wheezing, coughing all the time especially at nights when I try to lie down a bit.Live on sofa as can’t get out of bed but propped up re pain & very disabled.

On Salamol now, have to use it constantly, anything else help? Working on mould in house, fresh air,Cetirizine for allergy but seems to be getting worse making M.E worse too, already exhausted.

Any other suggestions?Thanks,it’s getting ridiculous!

The Salamol is a short acting bronchodilator so will not address the underlying respiratory disease and any relief will last up to 4 hours. It's recommended that any asthmatic having to take their bronchodilator every day requires prevention treatment. In the main this is usually long term inhaled steroids, but given your bone health you should discuss potential alternative medications with your doctor.

Details on treatment can be found on the Asthma UK website here, asthma.org.uk/advice/inhale...

You can also discuss your asthma with an Asthma UK nurse;0300 222 5800 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).

What’s an OP fracture? Possibly your recent ill health has has made you more susceptible to asthma triggers. Since allergies caused your asthma problems previously they probably play a large part now, you have to remove them from your environment - keep everything as clean, dust and mite free as possible. Boost your immune system by taking 4000IU vitamin D (100mcg) and 25mg zinc daily and also take an iron supplement.

A dehumidifier might be of use to you - help prevent mould and one with a Hepa filter will clean the air. Air pollution generally is bad for asthmatics - smoke, fumes, etc.

Good luck.

Are you taking aspirin or ibuprofen for pain relief? Just wondering if your asthma is being aggravated by them if you are. Some asthmatics can't tolerate NSAIDs and if they do have such sensitivity should use dry powder inhalers rather than aerosol inhalers. Might be worth discussing with your doctor if you think you may have such an sensitivity (and discuss additional asthma treatment as a preventer).

Thanks for your responses.Nurse now given me steroid preventative inhaler to use for couple of weeks.OP is Osteoporosis,I have multiple vertebral fractures so mostly immobile as I think Arthritis now set in.Been dealing with mould, bad this year but think Kyphosis, bent over re OP doesn’t help, squashing my innards. Will see if new inhaler works.

Thanks.X
