Night time coughing

Hi my son has been diagnosed with Asthma, he is 4 yrs old. His coughing is particularly bad at night-time and sometimes wakes up crying and occasionally is sick.

Is this a mild attack? I'm very confused.

hi,

my son has times when he coughs alot during the night,

coughing at night can be a sign of his asthma not being controlled properly.

i think you would be best getting him back in to the see the doctor.

hope he gets sorted

Thanks Mel,

He has been given the Preventer (brown) & Reliever (blue) We have only been giving the reliever when he is coughing. I don't know when he should take the preventer as he dosn't cough during the day.

Hi Stephanie. Your son should Take his Preventer twice daily as far as I know. Because It helps build up the airways against triggers and such it is important he takes it regulary.

Hope This Helps

I'll try this. I'm also going to take him down to the doc's.

hi :) not a medical expert here lol...but as far as I know..if someone's been prescribed with a preventer .then that should be taken as the doc has prescribed..you usually find if it's taken correctly then it should help the night time coughing episodes..if it doesnt then go back and see your doc or have a word with the asthma nurse at your health centre

Hi, My Son has asthma he is 17mths old. I know when his asthma is not controlled as he coughs alot during the night. The asthma nurse advised me that a coughing fit during the night can be a sign that the asthma is not under control but can also indicate an attack. Your reliever inhaler should help but if not then you need to be seeking medical attention straight away. If the reliever does help but the coughing returns during the night then best to get into the GP and get your son's asthma medication reviewed. My son has had 4weeks of severe asthma episodes I think the cold weather arriving has really taken it's toll.

Hope your son is feeling better soon x

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies. Took my son to docs this afternoon and it turns out that he has an infection. His glands are slightly swollen and his tonsils are red.

So thankfully it wasn't an attack......panic over.......feeling really protective since he got diagnosed. I'm also very protective of my oldest son as he had pnemonia twice when he was 2.

Thanks again for all the replies. Glad to know I'm not on my own.

Hi Stephanie,

I'm glad that you've got your son seen by the doctor and sorted out. I do hope that things improve now.

Prolonged coughing, especially at night, certainly can be a sign of uncontrolled asthma, though - sometimes the only sign. Asthma doesn't necessarily have to mean breathlessness, wheeze and tight-chestedness. If he does have these problems in future, I would certainly consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Preventer inhalers like Becotide should be taken at the dose directed by your doctor all the time, whether your son is experiencing symptoms or not. They have a preventative effect in damping down inflammation in the airways, so they need to be taken all the time to maintain this.

Hope this helps

Em H

Nightime coughing...

Hello Stephanie,

yes, you should take your son to your GP as this coughing may be caused by his asthma, and can cause attacks during the night. From experience, it will certainly scare him and cause a lot of discomfort.

I suffer badly with night-time coughing as my asthma causes a severe build up of catarrh. My GP prescribed ""Montelukast"" tablets to help this problem and they have helped me but not stopped the problem as my asthma is severe, but at least the night-time asthma attacks are now few and far between.

I hope that this has helped you, and remember, you can also call one of the Asthma UK specialists for more information.

Best wishes to you and your son, John.

Please Help

My son 7 yrs suffers from asthma. His main trigger is cold weather. He has bad cold for a week which is making his cough worse. We have doubled his brown inhaler to 8 puffs a day for last 5 days. His cough is getting worse during the day and evening and the double dose has no improvement. He is not wheezy or breathless. He had an attack 5 wks ago, he was very wheezy with constant cough and had to take steroid tablets for the first time. We don't want to keep giving him steroid tablets.

Can someone please advice what I should do since the increased dose is not making any difference and also how long I need to give double dose for. I don't find my gp very helpful and our surgery don't have an asthma clinic.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.
