Hi Olive
No christina means bicard of soda the ENT department of the heartlands hospital suggested to me about do nasal duching as they callit with this solution to clear the nasal passages they said to just put some of the solution in the palm of your hand and sniff it in and out trying to get it as far back as possible but make sure your hands are steril with some antibacterial hand gel first cause of sniff up more germs but the discusting bit is that when u sniff out all the mucus comes back with it they suggested do it up 5 times aday at first then lower it to just twice aday but being as i cant breath throu my nose very well it doesnt really work for me but because im now on 7% hypertonic saline nebs i find this just as good to remove the mucus

This is what yogis call netti. Using tepid, previously boiled water and a weak salt solution. You can actually buy a little netti pot - plastic a bit like a teapot I suppose you put the spout up your nose and sluice away.
I have tried it but wasnt happy with it I felt that it may even spread germs - I also felt that I was dripping for hours afterwards.
Can any of the medical bods tell me why bicarb of soda is beneficial.
Is there any evidence that this douching will prevent viruses getting hold?
Has anyone used Vicks First Defence?

There's been some previous threads on Sterimar, and also on techniques for sinus irrigation with saline, which is a similar idea to what you're talking about, Christina - if anyone's interested, do try the search facility.
Thank you for sharing your experiences, Christine.
