Write down the top 25 songs you cannot live without. The ones you can listen to over and over and never get tired of. They don't have to be in any particular order. These are the songs that make you laugh, cry, think of an old friend, whatever.
1 Film for the Future - Idlewild
This reminds me of taxi-ing my younger daughter Kari to and fro with her friends before she could drive. At the time, I'm not sure I'd say it was a favourite song of mine. Many years later, hearing again brings back happy memories of that time. I have this song on my i-Pod.
2 Walking on Sunshine and Echo Beach
Both remind me of my first Clio. Red. 1.2 Paris. Not long after we bought the Clio, Renault was doing a big push on publicity and all new Clio owners received a CD of driving songs. All songs to make me drive with such a big smile. The Clio was the first of our small pocket rockets after many years of driving big cars.
4 On the Road Again - Willie Nelson Not a great Willie Nelson fan, this is a great song to hear when taking out our oldest VW Campervan - Seymour - for his first trip of the season.
5 Remember You're a Womble - Mike Batt
Memories of the daft 1970s when anything seemed to get into the top ten. Elton John with HUGE specs. Bibbed trousers. Denims with WIDE flares. Hot-pants. Chunky platforms.
6 Tiger Feet - Mud
Always makes me want to get up and dance. For the sake of my family's embarrassment, I don't get up anymore. Who will admit to remembering the dance to Tiger Feet? Went to see Mud at Green's Playhouse/Glasgow Apollo. We had a box!
7 House of the King - Focus
Also seen at the Apollo. Couldn't believe a band could play so loudly. Literally blown away. Sitting under the balcony, could almost feel the sound wave passing through us and back again.
8 Hamburger Concerto - Focus
Played by the organist at our wedding. My mum had done some research and discovered Focus had based their album on the Brandenburg Concerto - this allowed us to have a piece of Focus played for the wedding. I'd have preferred 'House of the King' but my mum said no.
9 One Night in Paris - 10cc
Instead of something sensible like a washing machine when we got married, we bought a Dynatron Music Centre from Wylie & Lochhead. Cost an arm and a leg. For which, in those days (1974), they not only delivered but stayed to set up the system for us. Really brought out the effects in this track. You would swear blind that someone had actually run down the steps and knocked over some milk bottles just outside your door. Brilliant sound. Luckily we lived in a tenement with very thick stone walls to keep in the sound. Saw 10cc at the Apollo too.
10 Imagine - John Lennon
Brings back memories of lounging about in the Art Room at school when term was nearly over and lessons had all but stopped. Last day of school, I delivered the school magazine (in which my poems had a whole page to themselves) and skipped out of the front door. Freedom!
PS Unlike John Lennon's Imagine, my poems haven't stood the test of time. Cringe.
11 500 Miles - Proclaimers
Always makes me laugh as I think of the Comic Relief single with Peter Kay and Matt Lucas. Fabulous.
12 Stay with Me - Shakespeare's Sister
The memory of my two girls singing this will stay with me forever. Kari would take the main higher part and Chrissy would take the lower verse part. Its a good memory.
13 Bonnie & Clyde - Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames
My little brother would sing this. Very funny at the time.
14 Heart of Asia - Watergate
My key to the world of techno music. Never looked back. Would play this while driving my green metallic Suzuki Vitara Verdi, cream leather seats. Hood down. Yeehaa!
15 Jump into the Fire - Harry Nilsson
Great drum solo. Jim Gordon of Derek and the Dominoes on drums.
16 Layla - Derek and the Dominoes
First holiday in London with Ian. Riding the top of a red London bus, from Crystal Palace. As it drove down the road, you'd hear this song from transistor radios on open window sills, many times through the journey. London, sunshine, summer. Brilliant times.
17 At The Heart of It All - Nine Inch Nails
Draws you in. Don't know really why I like it but I do. Good to listen to when everyone else is out. Be a great funeral song.
18 Bachelor Boy - Cliff Richard and The Shadows
Playing this on my record player one sunny day, I'd the window open. My Mum hanging out the washing heard the record and started to do the dance that they did to it on the film, Summer Holiday. Dancing abruptly stopped as Mum caught sight of the lady next door giving her an odd look from her kitchen window. Mum came inside and we fell about laughing. Every time I hear it, I get a picture of my Mum dancing and waving the tea towel in her hand.
19 The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
Memory of salesman standing by as, by bringing in our own LP, we made up our mind on Dynatron stereo system in 1974.
20 Take Five - Dave Brubeck
Smiley track. Good to drive to. Makes me think of holidays on Arran with my folks.
21 Black Night - Deep Purple
First thing I bought with my first salary. Magic!
22 Volare
Makes me laugh. Once saw programme where two of the characters sang this driving down a bumpy road. Volare o-O-O-O-oh.
23 Don't let the Sun Go down on Me - Roger Daltrey
Haunting. For driving home after being made redundant.
24 Hotel California - The Eagles
That intro - Wow!
25 Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Nothing equals the first time of hearing. Best listened to in a darkened room. Joss sticks optional.
