Why do selfharmers get the urge to keep on doing it?

Because of the rush of endorphines (the body's natural feel-good chemicals) that is released when they self harm. It makes them feel better, and gives a natural high/calm to their distress.

I know several people who sh, and one of them is very close to me.

It takes your mind off the real pain and makes the real cause go away. Even if it is only for those few minutes. It does help them take their minds off it. I think alot of people see it as a really bad thing and that people who do it should not be a member of society. I think that if they are sh'ing, they obviously need and want help.

After stopping for over 9 years why would a person start doing it again or start wanting to do it again really strange questions but i have to know thanks people x

I have a friend who is well into her 40's who is married to a MP, she seems one of the strongest people imaginable, her husband is obviously - locally for him - high profile and in a job that requires a lot to dedication and effort. She self harms, she says she feels no pain when ""cutting"" no release just an incredible level of control over herself and her destiny.

My daughter tells me self harm has become almost fashionable amongst teenagers these days, many of her friends are very proud of their scars and they can't wait to show them off. Maddie finds this ""fashion"" thing quite abhorrent, she recognises that some are genuine self harmers and that they do need a lot of help by the right professionals but most are those she knows who claim to be self harming are doing it because it is like a form of tattoo or piercing.

The person i know who does it started when she was 14 and stopped at the age of 22. at the time she stopped she was getting help from some things that happened to her as a child and as an adult she got 100% better Latley she says things have been comming back to her that she doesnt like to think about and the only way she knows how to stop thinking is by hurting herself. So far she has not done it and she said she keeps fighting these urges but you can see the pain in her face shes 31 and feels like 101 thanks guys x

You might get more info from the National Self Harm Network, nshn.co.uk

I work as a residential student warden for my university and many of our regular contact cases are with students who self harm. In our training sessions about understanding self-harm we were asked to imagine a really really bad day and then describe what we would do for as a source of relief. Many of the team described eating chocolate, hiding under the duvet, having a bath, screaming into a pillow / punching a pillow etc. The lady leading the session then asked us to imagine that we were not allowed to do those things. She then asked us to discuss this in relation to self harm. It led us to realise that self harm for what ever reason is a release mechanism to that individual just as we might want to come home and hide under the duvet and therefore how frustrating it is for those who self harm to be told 'you can't / must not do this anymore'.

I thought I would share this with you as it really helped our team to understand the issues surrounding self harm. I need to go offline as my dinner is almost ready but there are some websites and books recommended to us and I'll dig the information pack out and then come back later!

If u want to talk more please feel free to p m me.

Here is the link to the website from the organisation who came to do our training harm-ed.co.uk/index.html

The useful links and self-harm information sections are very informative. Also the organisation is run by two sisters with direct experience of self-harm.

If everyone's ok with this, I'm going to remove the thread now as some users have found it upsetting. Kerry-anne, I hope things work out for your friend.
