British money

Hi all

I would be much obliged if you could answer my silly question. How exactly does the British money work? I know there are pounds (lol), but what and how many fit into a pound? don't want to look like an idiot when I get over there. Thanks

Brynne

Nope, that pretty much covers it!

One thing to note is that should you encounter a vending machine, it probably won't accept 5p, 2p or 1p coins, but will accept all the others. Also that, due to the number of counterfeit notes that used to be around, you hardly ever see a £50 note - I'm 30 years old and have only ever seen two!

A good rule of thumb over here is to remember that £1 = $2 (or thereabouts), which should make it easier to compare prices here with those at home.

All the coins are very different in design, making it easy to tell them apart. See here for an overview:

The same applies to the notes; each one is a different size (with the £5 being smallest and the £50 the largest), with a different design and in a different colour - the £5 is mainly green, the £10 mainly orange, the £20 mainly purple and the £50 mainly red.

thanks so much for your replies Emma and Steve, this helps me a lot.

My dad is going to get me my notes today.

Thanks again

Brynne

It may also be worth mentioning that there has just been a new £20 note and both old and new are currently in circulation.
