People who inspire me...

I have a great friend who, like myself, has severe asthma. We were next to each other in hospital the last time we were both bad. She not only has asthma but lots of other health issues. These, however, do not stop her from being there for me & lifting me up when things get too much. She inspires me & teaches me that I can go on & there is so much in life to be grateful for. Thank you my dear friend.

What a lovely post. You and your friend are lucky to have each other.

Two people stand out for me. Firstly, there was someone I thoroughly disliked. He had suffered all his life with crippling arthritis and didn't have a single unaffected joint in his whole body. He was in terrible pain all the time but he went out every single day and walked as far as he could to try to keep some mobility in his joints. After his wife died suddenly he brought up the children alone, coping with the housework and cooking without any assistance. He was never out of pain from the time he was about 7 but he coped with it and made the best he could of his life. He showed me what courage really is.

My second person married a family friend much to everyone's concern because he was, as the saying goes, 'known to the police'. We saw disaster looming but he was absolutely devoted to our friend. She developed arthritis and within 5 years was unable to do anything for herself. He dressed and undressed her, fed her, bathed her, took her to the toilet and did all he could to make her life better. He didnt' change when she developed dementia and became very difficult, and when she was frightened of the metal spiders climbing up the walls he'd cheerfully get a broom and sweep them off for her. His distress when she died was absolute and he showed me what loving someone is all about.

oh Gosh both of these posts have moved me to tears.

Mine is my best friend who has been through thick and thin with me...knows when it is time to laugh and time to cry, knows me better than myself and also knows when enough is enough. I owe her so much and I only hope she realises just how special she is to me.

Yep. :( Have a good friend who's been through a lot. Don't realise just how much has gone on sometimes until talking to others. Have seen a lot of people at work who just get on with life cos have to despite whatever they've been through. Often get ""that must be a depressing area to work"" but it's not, laugh or cry coping I think.

I have 2 people who inspire me. One being a very good friend of mine that was there for me when nobody else was, and is the only person I let the hospital phone at silly o'clock when I'm doing the poorly thing. She makes me giggle on a regular basis and is there for me to moan at, but is one of the strongest people I know despite her own asthma being up s**t creek.

The other being my mum. The past 4 years have been rubbish for both of us and she's still managed to keep a brave face, especially in the past year when she's been to hell and back with her ex-husband, learning to deal with a severely asthmatic stroppy teenager and a severely dyspraxic nine year old all at once. She just takes it all in her stride and still manages to make me a dinner most nights ;)

One person I really look up to is Sir Steve Redgrave. Im an athlete and think that Steve is a huge inspiration as he sufferes from diabetes but is still elite. Whenever my asthma is playing up and Im forced on the bench, I always think of Steve and feel inspired to get better as quick as possible. Helps my mind more than my body!
