I think you'll find that, as a general rule, GPs tend to avoid diagnosing asthma under the age of 2 years unless there is particularly compelling evidence to prove that asthma is present.

Salbutamol and atrovent inhalers aren't just used for asthmatic kids; they provide useful symptomatic relief to ""happy wheezers"" as well, including the group of children who get viral-induced wheeze without being asthmatic.

Even if they are asthmatic, a good proportion of children with early childhood asthma will grow out of it, either by the time they get to school, or by the time they leave primary school.

*shudder*

Text speak AND a row of exclamation marks with 1s at the end! Sorry, but that really makes my teeth itch.

Folks - and in the main you're very good at this - can we try and use proper English on these boards. Some of us are in our 30s, you know...! ;)

I agree. In paediatric medcine children are not diagnosed with asthma untill they are at least two. The under twos are prone to wheeze with viral infections but that doesn't mean that they have asthma.

laugh out loud steve!

Thanks, Em!

I'm fine with LOL, and BTW, and IMHO and so on - but it's very hard to read smthn wrtn in txt spk. I dread to think how you'd cope if you were dyslexic.

well steve jst ask me 2 interpret the txt instead of gettin a strop on lol ,yea my dawta is a happy wheezer haha x

Excellent. An offer of a 24-hour on-call translator. Fortunately I don't encounter many teenagers so I think I'll pass.

Now, as a *moderator*, I'm going to ask people to refrain from using text speak on these boards, please.

I'm not having a ""strop"", but a number of people have PMed me since my earlier post to thank me and tell me that they have great difficulty in reading such posts. Some even don't bother trying to decipher them, so by posting using text speak you might miss out on some useful information.

As as I said below, good luck to any dyslexics who might be trying to work out what you've written.

Mandy, Maybe they are diagnosing asthma due to the fact that not all under one's are happy wheezers and some have real breathing difficulties due to asthma?

My son was going through a and e labelled as a known asthmatic by docs at six mths and was on preventer/releiver inhalers by time he was 3 mth.
