While we were on hols Chloe had quite a nasty reaction to a peanut(she had never had them b4). Her face puffed up , eyes swelled shut and her lips looked as if she had been having an overdose of botox not to mention she was unable to breathe thro her nose and coughing madly.
Luckily i had piriton and i dosed her up(prob overdosed) and gave her more eye drops by prising eyes open and things started to subside and ease.
We have now ben to our GP who has referred us on. What i wanted to know is what will happen from now, i have been thro all this but not until i was a teen so is it the same for younger kids- consultataion , then skin prick tests followed by new meds depending on results or are things done differently??
Also do kids referrals get thro quicker than adults or are we in for a long wait?
hi there, sorry to hear your wee one is going through the allergy route - i know how awful it is to see them in real trouble. im not really sure how the referrals work because michael had his first major reaction as an inpatient so they just kept him in while they did the rast tests and stuff. he got the skin prick tests for airbourne aleergens but the food ones were done via a blood test. i dont know if thats the same with every hospital but thats what happened with us, he was put on a daily antihistamine and was given a 2 step plan ie piriton followed by a dose of pred if it doesnt ease. i think thats the standard protocal.
michaels allergies have actually been getting worse this past wee while, he was very ill after what we think is cross contamination to peanuts - his lips and eyes swelled up and he was violently sick a few times, he then started to say that he wanted to go to sleep, we were having to shake him to keep him awake. his whole body then came out in hives - big fist sized lumps all over his body which he scratched to the point of bleeding, he was pulling at his tongue and throat and coughing in a ""full"" way, it was the single most scary experience of my life and i have to admit that i was too scared to use the epipen, he hadnt lost concsiosness so i wasnt sure whether he needed it, luckily the paramedics got there very quickly and took over for me - i have now been told that i should just do it, cos the symptoms were consistent with needing adreneline.
i hope you get it sorted soon and that you dont have too much allergywise to deal with, let me know how you get on and if you need any tips just let me know, ill be happy to help
