Growing out of it!!!!

Hi

Does anyone else out there get really annoyed when people say ""don't worry he will grow out of it"" or am I just being over sensitive? I know people mean well, BUT......

Yes Clare, I get it ALL the time! They mean well but it is so irritating. Sometimes I say 'I never grew out of it' (which is true).

yes people often say this, about little nutters eczema and allergies too, though to be honest his asthma has been very well controlled lately and he isn't on much medication. But this could easily change we are just lucky at the moment, though I do believe if kids do 'grow out of it' their asthma is still underlying and could resurface at any time.

Same here, so many people have said to me, don't worry, he will grow out of it. I think people just say things like that, because basicaly they don't know what else to say.

I even get people saying that also, about my daughter, who is deaf,and uses two hearing aids. they will say stupid things like, she is getting older now her hearing will be better, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! makes me want to scream.

Pool the number of times we've heard this too!

It confuses me too as dr's have sometimes said this too! Then on other occAsions they've said she won't as my husband still has bad Asthma!

I never know what to say to folk who ask if she'll grow out of it! What do you all say? As at the end of the day, it would be brill but then I hit reality and think she probably won't!

I've had that too. Diagnosed in my late 50s, a friend said I couldn't have asthma as his grandson had grown out of it in his teens and it was probably just a bad cold.

I had a nurse at the neurology dept at the hospital tell me it was 'VERY unusual' for someone to develop asthma as an adult and have no symptoms as a child!

the amount of times i have heard that in my life time, we will say it to anyone but most people dont grow out of it as i never did

Yep...got the 'she'll grow outa it' just today at work....and also, 'just take her off all her meds and inhalers and I bet she'll be fine' !!!!

Nope, your not being over sensitive. I once had a GP ask me ""why haven't you grown out of it?"". Think I was 19 at the time, I managed to give some calm reply but the thoughts in my head weren't quite so ladylike!

I've never been without asthma but two of my family members have. Only for short times though, I guess there won't be many people here saying they've grown out of it but I it must happen. It seems that, right now, asthma is seen as a kids problem.

Thats maybe because those of us who've grown up with it are good at hiding it. I know I am, its something I learnt to do as a teenager. I guess I've not helped but most of my asthma issues as a teenager were down to peoples reactions to the thought that I had ""asthma"" - as opposed to asthma episodes. Once the habit of hiding it is developed, its difficult to go against it. Hiding my asthma is part of me. Those formative years can be very powerful.

We kept getting told that Matty will grow out of it, he is now almost 11 and is still brittle and on maintenance pred.It really isn't helpful when they tell you he may grow out of it and worst of all it's the doctors grrrrrr!He has scoliosis and harrisons sulcus because of asthma.

I was a brittle asthmatic as a child, it did go when i was 7, returned when I was 35 (mild) and became brittle at 40.The only good thing is I know what I'm doing regarding his treatment as he goes under so quickly.Shame I'm so naughty looking after myself!!!!!!

My son has Harrison Sulcus too, due to his asthma not being controlled! Did your son develop the scolioses after the harrison sulcus or did they develop alongside? I just want to be able to keep an eye on this, thank you.

I get this aswell. I have people mention the 7 year cycle all the time, but we shall see...

Matty got the harrisons sulcus first, cant ever remember him without it.The way to check the scoliosis is when they are old enough is to get them to touch their toes and slowly stand up straight.You will see any curvature as they uncurl.Matty had brittle asthma as soon as diagnosed at 6 months which changed to type 2 at 4 years.They then spent the next few years arguing it wasnt asthma but still had loads of meds but it was so poorly controlled.I noticed his spine was crooked about 4 years ago when he was 7.We go to a chiropractor after the hospital says its slipping again.Its expensive but it works and no way do I want rods in his back if complimentary meds work.The next few years are the ones to watch through puberty.

Do you know, I have just got off the phone from my mother in law who doesn't seem to care about my son at all, I told her he had been in hospital etc and all she said was.... ""he will grow out of it"" Aaragh..... she didn't even ask if he was ok now!!!

We all hope that but sadly we know that isn't always the case and unless she has a working crystal ball and knows that for a fact why say it! Sorry to rant on, I just thought this was the best place to do it.

Hi Clare rant away, Its what this site is for.

A while ago when my son was ill with his asthma, my mother in law phoned us for something, I told her Chrissy was quite poorly again, and she burst out laughing. I couldn't believe it, so much family support (none that is). I was so furious i put the phone down on her.
