2 1/2 year old girl, top lip very swollen during an attack, what could this be ???

Hi all, I am new to this site. My little girl Ruby was diagnosed at 11 months after 3 hospital admissions with a viral wheeze. She originally only had breathing problems at the start of a cold it was like it would go straight to her chest everytime. She has over the last 6 months had a number of episodes where she wakes up in the night screaming. A wheeze then develops and i give her blue inhaler a number of times. She does not have a cold when this happens. Last week we had problems 3 nights in a row, but the wheeze was hardly there it was like a full on chesty cough that then went after a few sessions on her inhaler. On night 2 and 3 her top lip became quite swollen. This was after having to have 5 puffs 4 times within the same hour. Any ideas what this could be at all, it has been bugging me ever since. She is also extremely pale at the moment, has been for a couple of weeks with dark circles under her eyes, could this be related or maybe something else????? I am guessing that she has asthma now and not a viral wheeze.

Thank you in anticipation of any help offered, feel so alone with her breathing difficulties as it is.

Hi Lou,

Welcome to the forum. First of all, you are not alone - lots of parents post on here and we know how you feel and what you are going through. My 13 yr old son was diagnosed with asthma as a baby and I know what a worry it all is. Re. the swollen lip - I wonder if your daughter bit her lip at some point, or if she had an allergic reaction to something?

The best thing to do is take her to the GP. I always hot foot it to the surgery with my son when he's not well, just to check it's not gone on his chest. There are different meds and inhalers they can try to help sort out your daughter's asthma.

I've also contacted the out of hours service lots of times when we've had problems at night, they are very good. Good luck and I hope things improve for you.
