Does my son qualify for a blue badge?

Hi Guys

Winter is brining Asthma misery for my two year old son, the cold air is affecting his asthma and even going out to the shops in cold weather results in so much coughing my son throws up!

Does anyone know if I can apply for a blue badge for parking close to shops ect on behalf of my son?

It would be great if we could park close to shops for his comfort. The mum and baby parking bays are never available and of course I cannot park on yellow lines.

If you have applied for one, I'd be very grateful for your advice!

It would be highly unlikely you would be able to get one. (Sorry to be the bearer of bad news) usually you need to be in reciept of DLA. I have a link here which may give you further information.

Unfortunalty unless hes in recept of higher rate mobility of DLA its on how fast can walk rather than the reasons you want to park close to shops and my local wanted me to have a chat with the community OT before I could get mine and my mobility is limtedi

Who automatically qualifies for a Blue Badge?

Anyone over two years old automatically qualifies for a Blue Badge if they:

are registered severely sight impaired (blind);

receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance;

receive a War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement; or

have received a lump sum benefit from the Armed Forces and Reserve Forces (Compensation) Scheme within tariff levels 1-8 (inclusive) and have been assessed and certified by the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency as having a permanent and substantial disability which causes inability to walk or very considerable difficulty in walking.

What other eligibility criteria qualifies for a Blue Badge?

Anyone who is over two years old would be eligible if they:

have a severe disability in both upper limbs, regularly drive a motor vehicle but are unable to operate, or have considerable difficulty in operating, parking meters, and/or

have a permanent and substantial disability which means they are unable to walk or have very considerable difficulty in walking.
