Do you use anything in the water when he washes?

There are special bath aditives etc but one of the best thing you can use is aqueous cream or Epaderm as a soap substitute. Epaderm is quite thick but it is more or less water based. ( Remember the bath mat to avoid slips!)

I would only recomend washing twice a day and moisturise often. A bath once a day with loads of cream or moissturising bath aditivive.

When at home you can apply loads - play at being a snowman! That worked for a child I was caring for once on a Kick Asthma Holiday. cover him at night in thick layer of cream and use loose cotton PJs. And yes I know it creates loads of washing but for flare ups it is worth it.

Remember - You can never use too much cream.

Also ensuring he drinks a lot will help.

Any Eczema experts out there please add your ideas too!

Our boys eczema was so bad by six months we finaly saw a specialist, he prescribed strong steroid creams to be used along side Aveeno cream, it worked like magic, Ewans face had been so bad for so long he looked like a different baby it was amazing. They are 3 now and they still get little patches and flair ups but we still controll it with steroids, aveeno cream and aveeno bath oil. Never use any other product in bath, try and fugure out if anything he is eating or coming into contact with is making it worse. We found all the aqueous, diprovate..etc creams made them worse and things they were eating. I would ask your dr for a steroid cream and the aveeno cream and oil if I were you, once you cear it up it will be easier to controll.

Hope this helps!

Another thing.... different brands of Aqueous creams etc can have different ingredients in them - one brand may be OK whereas another may not. It can be a bit hit and miss with the creams - what suits one person may not suit another.

Also with steroid cream, use it sparingly as it says on the pack and pop it on before the emolients / aqueous cream. You will need a different type / lower strength one for use on the face.

Perhaps a trip to the GP is needed as Mum of 3 suggests.

if his eczema continues to deteriote after trying various treatments maybe you should ask for your son to be referred by your GP to the dematology department at your local hospital where they can do allergy tests etc and other alternative treatments that your gp may not be able to prescribe /or isnt aware of. good luck :)

Thanks to all of you who kindly posted your advice.

I want to say, that Evan's face has much improved in the last week. The basic changes I made (changed the face wash, body and bath products and I now apply cream generously) seems to work. A could not find here the Boots Aqueous cream, but started using Aveeno Baby products instead (soothing relief). I also was told by the dermatologist to use Aveeno calamine and hydrocortisone, but I only used the calamine so far.

Thanks again!

eczema care

hi! im from portugal and my daughter has eczema... this is a very boring problem because she had use many creams and gel for shower bath.. and what appends is that in a short time her skin is full of the products and i have to switch to another.. its always like that.. the best products were Uriage! try it..

You've probably already thought of this but the product that has made the biggest difference to my skin and also to my brother's has been the use of a baby detergent called Am-O-Lin Sensitive laundry liquid.

My brother who is 60, was almost covered with an eczema type rash. He is now fine and so am I.

The only cream that worked on my Son's excema was Pro topic. It was amazing. He went from being covered in it and needing bandages, getting infection after infection, etc to being almost clear within a week! Amazing!!

Hello Marian, I assume that product is only available in Australia??

Pro topic is a good product but only used for severe cases where steroids haven't work as it is a very potent cream.

Yes, Kate - Amolin laundry detergent is made by Bayer Australia and is only available in Australia and New Zealand. Bayer don't sell any laundry products in Europe, so I can't even suggest something that might be equivalent to it.

My 6 month old daughter has dreadful eczema but the aqueous creams have not worked nor the steriod cream! We found it just locked in the eczema but didn't help clear it. So we're currently trying a holistic approach which seems to be helping...we use calendula cream.

I'm reluctant to use more chemicals on delicate skin particularly steriods but wonder if really is the only successful option...

eczema

hi i know just how hard it is my daughter has suffered from eczema since a baby it is hard getting under control ,in january my daughter was hospitilised because it got so bad since then we have been using aveeno creams and it is fantastic it is still bad but the improvement has been phenominal the other thing ive done is she has a fan in her room to keep her skin cool at night and i wet wrap when needed tubifast garments are also very good and can be prescribed by your doctor.i dont know if you attend a dermatology clinic but they are often very helpful with ideas and new treatments that your doctor may not be aware of.the other thing ive done is got her allergy tested and found that she is allergic to soya and dairy which is very common in those with eczema and asthma so cutting out dairy can help alot however if this is a road to go down it is important to do it with the help of a doctor or dietician as we have ,because of other health implications of cutting out.i hope this helps i know just how frustrating this can be.

First of all, best wishes Ani and to your little boy. xxooxx

Using oatmeal as an emollient is a handed down family recipe. Now that it can be found in a preparation such as Aveena, is good too. Aloe vera gel is very cooling too.

It's definitely worth talking to the GP and trying different creams/ointments etc. I've been through several (thank goodness for prescription pre-payment!) but have found one for now that, so long as I apply it religiously three times a day, is stopping flare-ups and the need for steroid creams which is great. I really noticed when I was in hospital recently and didn't have it applied and even when they gave me an alternative that my skin started complaining.

Also remember, you can never use too much emolient! (Aqueous or otherwise)

I was once told that if your not using a tub a week your not using enough.

I know it makes more washing etc but smother them at night in the stuff, play at being a snow person!

Hi, I hope you are having abit more success with the eczema. Obviously what works for one person won't work for others. My daughter had very bad ezcema as a baby and nothing seemed to work. We had so many different creams and lotions. It wasn't until we found out about her egg allergy and subsequently about her peanut and tree nut allergies that things started to improve, as we had to cut all of these traces out of her diet. A few years on now and her eczema has improved dramatically. She still gets the odd patch flair up and she consantly has it at the corners of her mouth but life is more bearable. We now use aveeno cream, timodine cream, hydromol ointment and emulsiderm in the bath (we recently saw a consultant at the hospital who perscribed these). These do help. We have also been told to use a lip balm throughout the day the keep her lips moist (although it can be hard to find one without nut oil in) so we use original vaseline. As I say everyones eczema is different but I hope that you get some ideas and help from the forum.
