Hi my daughter is 5 1/2 and on 200mcg of inhaled steroids twice a day. She appears to have violent mood swings and temper tantrums more so than I would expect. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this or any advice on what to do

Behaviour on inhaled steroids
Hi, The mood swings and temper tantrums may actually be the asthma rather than the inhalers. My daughters asthma was diagnosed because she literally turned into a different person when it started. She went from being a smiley happy go lucky person to a tantrumy whiney little thing. I took her to the doctor, who did some checks and told me that she had asthma, and that the reason for the mood swings was she was not getting enough sleep. Sure enough when we got the asthma properly under control her normal smiley person came back. Even now she is a big girl (11) I know that things are beginning to flare if she starts getting moody and bad tempered. Although as we hit the teen years I am not sure it will be so easy for me to diagnose.
So I guess what I am saying is, its very unlikely to be the inhaler as that level of steroid directly on the lungs should not cause mood swings, but that it might well be the asthma. I would go back to your doctor and talk about this, as your daughter may find an add on treatment helpful. Singulair was a miracle drug for my daughter, but it does not work well for everyone.
Good luck

My son is one and a half and has been on both preventer and reliever for 5 months with 5 serious admission in hospital. I was concerned about his behaviour changing on so much medication, but I am pleased to say that his behaviour only gets worse when he is feeling poorly - unfortunately he cannot tell me how he feels but this is a sure way of me telling and then checking his breathing by looking at his stomach to look for further signs - so see if he is sucking in at the ribs etc. His worse behaviour has been when his SATS levels have been low, whilst in hospital, over a small period of time this made him very grouchy and irritable. I hope this has helped in a small way.....but as mothers I don't think we will ever stop worrying.
Good luck.
Hi, my son is almost 4 and his behaviour is worse when he is ill. Many factors, ventolin usage increased, preventer increased and, often, pred being prescribed. We *know* that pred gives him issues but we are unsure if the others, when not on pred, is due to the ventolin, as this makes him more active or the steroid inhaler.
I have noticed a pattern from 400mcg of becotide, he gets very agitated. Unfortunately when he has a virus we have no choice but to up it for a few weeks until it calms down as this is one of his main triggers.
He was on singulair but is unable to use this anymore due to psychological side effect, very rare but he had them.
Have you talked to your GP about it? They may be able to offer you something else. When I phoned the nurse on here regarding a similar enquiry she mentioned another that was available but not licensed until age 4. Maybe give them a ring, they are ever so helpful.
I'm 17, but when I'm on pred or my Inhaled steroids are high, I become a right pain to live with. Mum says it's like having 2 teenagers in the same house!
Hi, my 4 yr old does definatly have more tantrums when her asthma is worse, but like someone else has suggested i think this is because she is soo tierd. We can tell when she is coming down with a bug as she is really mared, emotional and clingy for a few days before hand, perhaps because she's fighting bugs or perhspa coz she's not getting the quality of sleep she needs.
The reliever definatly does make her hyperactive though, and nebulisers do the same but worse, which is quite embarrasing when your in hospital ill and she's wanting to run around the place, lol.
hi
I've not been on this site for a while but we're having real problems with daughter's behaviour and it's reassuring to see that people are in the same boat.
Her asthma has been diagnosed as brittle and she's now on singulair tablets and serevent 175 twice a day. She is completely high from 5.30 in a morning to 8 at night (she's 5). It's like she's climbing the walls and can't be reasoned with at all. Her mood swings are terrible and she's very moody - or very very excitable. Her asthma is ok at the moment but I'm scared that if we cut down the drugs it won't be - at the same time I'm really really worried about these awful side effects. Would really appreciate some advice.
Janine.
