Hello everyone, I'm 69 and due for a hip replacement on 13th March and having doubts about going ahead. I've seen a private consultant because at present I am on the NHS waiting list to see an orthopaedic surgeon which could be another 16 weeks yet then anything up to 48 weeks for surgery. My doubts arise from the fact that I can get about on crutches, and do get my sleep. My pain control is 30mg/500mg cocodomol daily. I have seen physiotherapy, chriopractor and two lots of x-ray on the hip which shows moderate arthritis. It's costing me a second mortgage to pay private, so do I hold out for 64weeks or pay up, get my life back and move on. Any comments would be grateful.

Having 2nd thoughts about hip replacement
I have just had my fourth joint replacement (2 hips and 2 knees) and the NHS refused to do any of them as I am overweight and on steroids. I am so glad to have had them done as I can now get my life back. Your question is about waiting and only you can decide if you are willing to wait or not. I can tell you that hip replacementS are very successful, not too painful and life changing, but if you can wait then your pain is not as bad as mine was.
I have had both hips replaced and it's given me my life back
I can't recommend it enough
I had mine done on the NHS but at a private hospital I had to wait about 18 weeks each time after the initial consultation for the actual op
I had the first one in 2017 and second last September and I'm walking about 8-10 miles each week can do everything I could do before the pain and feel about 20 years younger
It's so worth having I have never ever experienced such excruciating pain as I did before the ops
Wishing you all the very very best
Hello Bowler, I am 83 yr. and had both hips replaced in the last 3 years with no complications; no pain since then, easy recovery, well worth it. I highly recommend it. Brica
