My husband has RA can anyone give me any positive news please, oh and I have ms and he's my carer

Hi my husband has RA, he's 61 and is seeing a specialist next week. He saw his GP today and was given a gloomy prognosis. I have ms and he is my carer, he still works but part time, his work is mainly manual these days but he lives for his hobbies of canoeing and target shooting, they keep him sane, I'm hoping that he's prescribed something that will allow him to continue to do this. His fatigue is very bad, I feel like saying now you know how it feels mate but I'm not one to say these sort of things and can only feel sorry for him. Can anyone give me some hope please?

Ok. I am 62 and got RA about 6 years ago. I was lucky and got diagnosed early. They threw lots of drugs at it. Methotrexate, naproxen, sulfasalzine and plaquinel. And I had no bad reaction to them. I have now been in remission for two years apart from one flare about 3 weeks ago. I still walk and play golf. So don't give up. Hope they sort medication out and your hubby can continue keeping fit. Although he may have to pack in canoeing. I had to give up squash due to it being in my shoulders. But can still play golf oddly!

Thanks for your reply dtec. that is some positive news, maybe if he can still use his target rifle that would be something. he's only had symptoms (of pain) for about 3 months (but could have had it previously and didn't know it). Just hope the specialist comes up with some good news too.

Try black seed oil it is rich in essential fatty acids ( mostly omega -6 and some omega 3) it balances and strengthens the immune system giving it the power to prevent infections and allergies, reduce inflammation, yet accelerate healing and control chronic illness 😊. Xx

Since 19.59 there have been over 200 different studies at universities and laboratories.... At the Cancer research laboratory of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA, one of the largest experimental studies so far proved that Nigella sativa oil had enormous success in the tumour therapy, without the negative side effects of common chemotherapy. They found that it increased the growth rate of bone marrow cells by a staggering 250% and inhibited tumour growth by 50%. It stimulated immune cells and raised interferon production, which protects cells from the cell-destroying effects of viruses. They confirmed the strongly antibacterial and anti-mycotoc effects, and that it has an effect in lowering the blood sugar level, which is essential for the treatment of diabetes.

I'm new to this so don't know how to send a link 😜

Go to the site showing the research results then copy the webpage at the top bar. Then paste it onto your next message. I just looked at the Hilton head cancer research lab and hospital web page and searched every combination of those words, and nothing I'm afraid.

Your bitter melon and black seed products are not generally recognized as safe and effective for the above referenced uses and therefore, are "new drugs" under section 201(p) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(p)]. New drugs may not be legally marketed in the U.S. without prior approval from FDA as described in section 505(a) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 355(a)). FDA approves a new drug on the basis of scientific data submitted by a drug sponsor to demonstrate that the drug is safe and effective. Furthermore, your bitter melon and black seed products are offered for conditions that are not amenable to self-diagnosis and treatment by individuals who are not medical practitioners; therefore, adequate directions for use cannot be written so that a layperson can use these drugs safely for their intended purposes. Thus, your product is misbranded within the meaning of section 502(f)(1) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 352(f)(l )], in that the labeling fails to bear adequate directions for use. The introduction of a misbranded drug into interstate commerce is a violation of section 301(a) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 331(a)].

Thanks for that info, I take flaxseed oil as it does the same thing plus it's supposed to help with myelinisation repair. But I think he's becoming more open minded as regards changing his diet etc, so I'll bear it in mind.

Flaxseed oil is good 👍🏼 but black seed oil is better 😊

There is always hope. Once his meds start working or they find the right cocktail of meds, he should be OK.

MS and RA are horrible diseases with some simularities. I was diagnosed with RA in 2014 and MS in 1990. Both are caused by inflamation and both causes fatigue. I had no pain with MS, but alot of pain with RA.

I was one of the "lucky ones" who's MS went into remission all by itself. There were no drugs in the 90's for MS back then. I can now officially say, after 20 years since my last "flare up of MS, that my MS was benign.

Take care and i wish you well

Sue

Hi I have come across people with both ms and RA. (Thank goodness my daughter is a health freak and doesn't smoke or drink and eats only organic or natural foods); as the genes don't tell a good story.

I still have flare ups of ms and am classed as Secondary Progressive but am trying to keep ms under control with a good diet, I do have pain and take a multitude of pills for it though.

You have given me some hope anyway, the trouble is that my husband is so impatient, he's been resting up for 2 days now (apart from caring for me) and is out in the garage using machines!

Thank you for your positive reply, lets hope the meds help get him sorted.

Thank you Kai, that is wonderful news!

I do take my diet seriously, (I'm a fan of George Jelinek) and do try to keep to his diet.

My husband is not keen on dietary advice, he eats meat, chips and pies, with a scattering of veg. and there's no changing him. still none of my friends with ms eat that healthily either.

Thanks kai, we may both need carers but never mind, as you say it might not come to that, not for a while anyway x

Came across your post - though I just realised that it is three months old. Things may have improved already. There is plenty of hope!

I am male, 59 and came down with RA about five years ago. I think it was kicked off by a virus. Hit me suddenly, I was very fatigued, suffered night sweats and had significant pain in my knees, feet and hands. Felt rather like very bad flu that kept going - except that the joint pains were much worse.. Couldn't bend my knees, couldn't grip anything tightly, changing gear in my car was painful, woke up at night with pain. Saving grace is that I didn't have a manual job - would have been impossible to do plumbing or electrical work in confined spaces.

Fortunately, a young GP investigated the symptoms and had me referred to Rheumatology. I was first put on Sulfasalazine which had me back hill walking in a couple of months. Unfortunately, that then caused liver problems. Came off that and symptoms came back. Was then put on methotrexate and after a couple of months noticed improvements. These continued steadily and I really don't have any symptoms now. I hope that this continues!

So, see a Rheumatologist. Pain killers, NSAIDs really don't have a massive effect on the problem. GPs won't prescribe the more powerful medications. Steroid injections can produce an instant improvement - but you can't have many of these. The "DMARD"s (methotrexate etc) CAN make a big difference.

They can also have serious side effects and you really must have the regular blood tests to monitor for problems (which can happen any time). They don't help everyone and some people just can't take them. They may take months to show an improvement. However, they should be tried soon - as once joints get damaged by RA then the drugs won't help. RA itself can cause a lot of side effects that you don't want to suffer.

So far as alternative medicine is concerned, I take Fish Oil capsules (not cod liver oil) and vit D supplements. There seems to be some evidence for these. Otherwise it seems sensible to try to eat a healthy mixed diet. Maybe avoiding certain foods could help. Certainly anything to which you are at all allergic seems likely to cause trouble

Best of Luck!
