Edoxaban after stroke

Hi.. in Jan 2023 I had a TIA and was put on Apixaban.

4 months later in May 2023 whilst out walking, I had a ‘mild’ stroke, in that it affected my legs and thankfully wasn’t so debilitating as it is for some people.

After an MRI confirmed the stroke, I was put on Edoxaban 60mg, which I have been on since. Normal daily side effects are light headedness and being occasionally off balance after taking it. It’s manageable and at least thankfully I’m able to carry on my daily walks, but in moderation.

My question is, 60mg seems to me to be quite a high dose (I don’t have AF) after 18 months of taking it, could this be reduced to 30mg now? I spoke to my GP about this and he said for me to stay on it.. I don’t feel convinced somehow? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Normally Edoxaban is given post-stroke when AF is suspected to be a possible cause. If this is not the case then alternative medication is considered.I would contact, or ask your GP to contact, your stroke team for advice.

Subject to medical advice, it may be possible to switch to a different anticoagulant. You would have been prescribed an antiplatelet such as clopidogrel if AF was not suspected. I'm happier on an anticoagulant, as I've not been tested for variants (allele) to the metabolising enzyme.
