I have been on a low dose of Rivaoxaban after a pulmonary embolism three years ago. I wonder if anyone has noticed any adverse effects over the long term

Rivaoxaban
I'veI've been on it 5 years and the only adverse effect I've noticed is that I no longer like red wine! Which could, I suppose, be my age as much as anything...
Thanks for your reassuring comments. I haven’t noticed any significant side effects for three years, but sometimes after a number of years a reaction may manifest. It’s great to be on a thread where support and information can be exchanged.
wine is a blood thinner , (that’s why Italians say it is good for health long life ) but on top of Rivaroxaban , not good . So that’s a good thing. I’m glad I have been reduced from 20 mg to 10 mg as no further P E , but Pharmacologist at G P said not much difference !
They do say you don't have to take it with food when you are down to 10mg,but as I am also on Metformin, which does have to be taken with good, I do anyway!
I have a very sensitive stomach with reflux, blood thinners like RIVROX make it worse 20 or 10 mg ( plus 5 mg statin) so I take it plus supplements I take , magnesium chelate for afib zinc Vit D b12 iron in a multi Vit . With a large drink of skim milk SLimfast , Choc or blueberry to protect my stomach from it . then a meal later. Harsh on stomach . I had hoped less bleeding risk with 10 mg , but as Pharma at G P SAID NO DEFFERNCE? Heamatologist wanted me off 20 to 10 mg as no recurring P E. It was unprovoked ( no reason ). So I’m happy with that . I wish I could be on 5 mg R ivarox to see how it feels. I think it makes me breathless on 20 mg . Feel the cold terribly ( old 70?)
I feel better on blood thinners than not as P E s dangerous , plus I was so brain tired before . ( oxygen circulation maybe?) I do have APS Hughes sticky blood syndrome so my normal is not normal . Auto immune sluggish.
I’m 73 if I can hang in a bit longer no more health stuff , I will be grateful. I’m not a marathon dancing singing 73 year old but who cares .
I went down to 10mg last autumn after just over 5 years on 20mg - as you say, what with statins, blood-pressure tablets, thyroid tablets and diabetes tablets (plus a multivitamin/mineral tablet), one is apt to rattle. They say old age is not for wimps, but as I won't be 70 until June and my mother is 95 on Saturday, how on earth would I know? I am NOT old yet!
Thank you Brookiebiceps and Jerry 99 for your comments. Great that all ok for 8 years. With every months supply of Rivaoxaban I get a sheet inside the box, and it lists possible side effects. Two that struck me were that you may feel constipated, (where I had noticed a change in my movements, but easy to remedy, by eating the appropriate foods) and something to keep a check on was my renal function, so next time I have a blood test will ask for this to be added.
dear Rusty
There is little evidence of this drug causing long term effects. What you must remember is that there are more problems with having a P-E, so, if there are done small anomalies then they are better than the consequences of a PE.
ITS great that you find this forum useful- that exactly what it is for.
Take care.
I think liver function is also important to check periodically-
Yes I agree with you Brookie
what caused your clots?
it was an unprovoked pulmonary embolism, so not able to find any obvious cause
same,so I'm on 10mg long term.
Same history as me. My dose 20 mg RIVROX . AS ASP clear and no further P E . Haematologist has reduced it to 10 mg. I feel better on it , as better blood circulation oxygen to my brain. Tired before PE. I feel cold more, even slight drop but as 70 maybe age. Thin blood . I have had no side effects . I make sure I take it with a milky SLINFAST drink to coat my stomach , as can be harsh in guts. I have the G P liver check blood tests , that should have if on RIVAROX ( , to see no damage to liver ) every 3/4 months religiously . I feel tired ( maybe age). Can get a bit breathless ( maybe not fit ) . What dose are you on? Any side effects .?
I was interested to see your comment on feeling the cold more. I have been on 20mg of Rivaroxaban for 7 years and am definitely more susceptible to the cold now. I was early 50’s when I started taking it so think it is the medication not age related.
It makes sense I think. Countries with very cold weather people eat high fat diets to thicken their blood . Eskimos Norway . In the tropics , one’s blood dies t need to be thicker . Cold drop unless heaters on my skin tingles hurts , cold sweats . That’s APS blood thinners . I think .I’m relieved 20 mg reduced to 10 due negative APS no clots .
Thanks for your comments blood red roses. I too am on 10mg Rvaroxaban for three years now. The only side effect I have noticed is discomfort to the gut and tendency to constipation, however thanks for your tip, to take the medication with milk as well as food. Just had a blood test and my red blood cell count and haematocrit level is slightly low. Low levels can be linked to breathlessness. I’m in on going discussions with GP, and I may change to Apixaban, as this is a little easier on the gut.
god yes protect stomach gut from Rivaroxaban ! It causes some folks to bleed in stomach . In poo . I use slimfast chocolate. Thick but not fattening . Just a half pint milk. I use skim milk as calories but you drink what you like . Have that then dinner . I have had no problem with stomach . I am sensitive and small stomach , so it works . No acidic fruit . No spices with it after RIVROX! I have been breathless once . We have to try and see what suits us . Fir me RIVROX is no problem . Must drink water or just drink ( not alcohol) otherwise my urine causes over sensitivity in vagina .( I think from RIVROX.
Thanks Redbloodroses, I’ve also cut out acidic fruit, but I do like a milky turmeric coffee. It’s encouraging that Rivaroxaban works well for people over the long term.
Turmeric coffee. Tell me more!
I have a coffee machine that grinds coffee beans and then produces an espresso. It produces a good coffee, as good as starbucks in my opinion. I then heat up milk in a pan and add a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Warning it is an acquired taste, but I have come to love that strong bitter taste. I also use turmeric in cooking and is a very good anti- inflammatory, very good against joint aches and pains.
I have been on 20mg Riveroxaban for 5 years no issues at all my gp prescribed lansoprazol in addition to the Rivaroxaban which I take every morning which protects my stomach
Thanks GW08
Good to hear of your positive experience with Rivaroxaban, it’s very reassuring that the medication is ok in the long term
Have been on it for a couple of years after problems with Warfarin…noe side effects with me and pleased overall to not have such frequent nurses visits. Annual blood tests needed and cuts do not bleed for me ..very happy with Rivaoxaban.
Thanks Mikel. Good to hear that You prefer Rivaroxaban to Warfarin.
