Awful fatigue and lathargy whole on anticoagulants? Anyone else felt like this?

Hey guys

I hope you are well.

I have been on ACs for the past 6 years and each one seems to have similar side effects on me.

These include but not limited to the following:

Regular brain fog

Lathargy

Extreme tiredness and fatigue

Confused state of mind.

I am currently 27 and feel as if these symptoms are related to the ACs as every time I came off them they seemed to dissipate over an extended period.

My fear is if I were to come off them of potential dangers with regards to clotting. I recently had a clotting susceptibility test done which came back negative and really don't want to take them anymore but was advised against this.

I feel in a catch 22 situation whatever I chose but these symptoms are affecting my daily life and it's difficult to explain to anyone.

Please help with any advice if you have e gone through similar.

Sadly, it's probably not the anticoagulants, but the after-effects of the clots that caused you to be prescribed them in the first place.

I have the same symptoms and much more, as I’m sure u do as well. Problem is mine are causes by multiple TIA’s , CVA’s and stroke. If u feel ur problems are an interaction with meds perhaps u can try different coal medications. If u stop them and still have blood clots you will probably end up worse then u are now! I’m sorry you are having such problems. All I can say is maybe try a different anti coat and f ur dr agrees that a change in coags would be safe for u to try.

Outside of medications u can try what I try to do everyone something new comes up. (Because new always becomes permanent with me any) I tell myself to accept it, adjust and move on. I do realize that we can’t always do this but at least you are trying something and mentality is at least 1/2 the battle!

Good Luck hang in there! Remember everyday both feet hit the floor is a good day! You can do This!

Souls Rebel.

Thanks souls rebel I appreciate you're related response. it seems as though at least you know what I mean, however I'm beginning to lose my patience and keep ability of coping with this.

Another issue is the fact that no one really understands me even the doctors, but when I have came off the anticoagulant currently apixaban my symptoms seem to fade which must mean that they are related.

I believe you, Adam. I am on my third anticoagulant, Apixaban after trying Rivaroxaban and Edoxaban, both of which caused dizziness and fatigue. I would like to come off Apixaban after two years of taking it, because I am experiencing progressive weakness in my legs, in spite of exercises. I am sure my GP will be against this, but I need to recover my life. I can’t walk more than 50 yards without severe muscle pain.

Hey emarho

I hope you are well.

I have the exact same issue on them and more. Weakness generally, extreme fatigue, confusion and more.

It's gotten to the point I don't know what to do as I know the blood thinner is cause these issues but don't know where to go to find out what exactly is causing all this.

I have an appointment with the neurologist to explain this to them, but worried of the situation as they might just say we haven't found anything but it might be due to the fact they don't test for the right thing.

So say for example they might test for thyroid, vitamins etc. But the issue may be due to cortisone, serotonin or melatonin levels. I only say this as they are more related to depression and anxiety feelings, but I'm terrified as it feels like I am at a dead end with no where to turn.

Another difficulty is the fact it's very difficult to explain this to make it clear. But all o feel is when I am on them these symptoms are overwhelming and when I'm off them everything just seems to go back to normal if u know what I mean. It's really complicated and I can t seem to find the problem

Hi there. I think your symptoms are definitely related to the anti coags. The meds affect the workings of thrombin in the clotting process and I think I was told thrombin is important in brain function, muscles, pain processing and loads more. Perhaps google thrombin to find out more. Things that might help... get full bloods done at doctors as the anti coags can deplete vitamin d, folic acid cause anaemia to name a few and you might need supplementing. Have you tried Dabigatran. Perhaps try Dabigatran if you haven’t already done so, it works in a slightly different way to the others and some people find it better (especially those who get lots of joint pains).

I've been on Warfarin for 16 years and it might be the bottom end of the AC's, with regular blood tests etc, but I can safely say that I experience no side effects whatsoever! :)

Yes, I've been on warfarin now for 5 years and although we have the inconvenience of monthly or more tests, it's proven reliable and safe and without the side effects of the newer anti coagulants.

Dear Adame27. Having been on Warfarin for over 30 years I can identify with you being on anticoagulants at such a young age. I have only felt "well" on anticoagulation when I have taken heparin injections as part of a bridging loan before and after surgery. I know some people do choose to take Heparin for life instead of warfarin but I really don't fancy daily injecting myself so I stick with the symptoms. Annel.
