Hello. I am new here and never joined an alopecia forum so this is all new to me. I am 26 years old and had alopecia areata for 12 years. My hair loss has never been that excessive and i’ve always managed to hide it well. I’ve had cortisol injections in the past but haven’t had any treatment for around 4 years. However these past few months i’ve lost around 1/3 of my hair, I have been under stress but i’ve been researching a lot regarding alopecia and mercury levels/heavy metals in the body. I had an amalgam filling at the start of March and I believe this may have had an impact on my current hair loss. Also, when I was diagnosed at the age of 14, 4 months prior I had a tragus piercing so i’m thinking that could have triggered my alopecia. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Alopecia Areata & Mercury
As far as I can gather, no one really knows what triggers alopecia. There are however a huge number of people with amalgam fillings who do not have it. Have you seen studies that show a connection ?
It is very hard to accept and deal with hair loss and you are very young . If you have lost a lot more hair recently then it might be worth talking to your GP and asking for a referrel to a dermatologist. I am only having telephone consultations with mine at the moment but it might be good to get the process started.
Best of luck
Dee
Yes i’ve read some studies which show a connection between the two, and when people have had amalgam fillings removed they have seen hair regrowth. I’m not saying that is the cause, but is something to consider for other autoimmune conditions too, you never know!
I’ve had a referral letter from my GP so waiting to see a dermatologist, hopefully I can get some form of treatment soon!
Thanks Dee
