Polyethyene glycol and propylene glycol

I do not know how to ask this.

Are these related or close enough to cause the same reactions? Miralax is polyethylene glycol and bayer asprin has propylene glycol.

I know i am jumping right in with a question without reading anything else and i apologise up front for that.

Polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol are very similar chemically. I am allergic to both and stay away from ALL the glycols. I even have a problem with glycerin. In Bayer asprin, besides the food colorings which can contain PG, it has triacetin which is actually glycerin triacetate. I react to it and had to have a compounded acetaminophen made up for pain.

I know. I'm not usually getting notifications either and I forget to check the site. Best of luck with your patch testing tomorrow!

Walli,

Can you tell me what type of patch test you are getting and what the patch test test for. I'm trying to get tested for Polyethylene glycol (PEG) but my Dr is not sure how to test me.

All i know right now is that they call it a patch test. A 3x5 bandaids lookinhg patch with rows of allergens on it. Wear it on you back teo days go back they remove it then you go back in 4 days and tell you what they found. Walli

I wrote a long doctor story on here somewhere and lost it.

I told the doctor my story about peg and said i wanted to be tested for peg, pg and any other chemicals that might be related.

So, She did what is called a patch test. It takes 3 visits to the office.

I had a horrible reaction to the patch and it is ongoing. I hope it will settle soon.

My app. Today to find results. Drum roll please!!! NONE of the peg or pg were on the test!!! It was Just a regular ole patch test.

Can you see the steam coming from my ears?? I am allergic to some metal. I guess that was a consultation for my troubles.

The horrible reaction was probably from peg or pg being on the patch itself or it was mixed in with the patch test metals so they go enter my skin better.

AND she said that i should just try to stay away from peg or pg!!!!

Well i could have told myself that.

Why did i even go there??? People, we are on our own!

I wont carge you a thing for this. It is free advice. If it bothers you just try to stay away from it. There now i fixed it for you because it seems this is as good as it gets.

Walli.

Honestly now, do i sound a bit disturbed about this doctor visit?

I went to a dermotoligist for my testing. They are the ones that finally found what I was allergic to.

Now that is interesting. How was the testing done?

scratch test. I had to have the test done on my back and it stayed on I think two days and then they read it. I was ready for it to be over the itching was awful.

I also found I was allergic to goldsodiumtheosulfate and Carba Mix at that time. The dermotologist did a really thorough chemical testing on me, which I had never heard of half the things.

Just spoke with the allergy office. I specified i wanted to be tested for propylene glycol. They do not even test for that at their office and the doctor did not tell me that. I could not have been any more clear in my request.

I think they are related and many people would be sensitive or allergic to both. But, I'm no expert either.

I've thought about buying Miralax and placing it on my skin for a time to see what happens???

When I was caring for my sister I gave it to her every day. If I got a little on my hands my gums would swell and if I got a lot on me then my gums would crack and bleed and all of the other reactions to go with it. I always know when I have come in contact with PEG. The dose determined how bad my reaction is. It always takes 2 weeks or more to get over it.

So how bad of a reaction do you have and do you want to chance it?

Yes. If you are allergic to one glycol, you probably react to all of them.

I have an allergy with anaphylaxy to peg, Im ok with pg. My scratch test make a big but late reaction (after 20-30 min)

Between this time, the doc make a injection with a little needle underskin with peg and it was positive +++ with this test without doubte.

The doctor tell me that there is a relation between the molecular weight and the size of the reaction.

So Im able to take pills with peg 80 without any problem but I cant touch to lax a day (peg 3350).

Hope it can help some one

I use Goodys powders or BC powders instead of pills in order to escape the glycols.
