Nose bleed on apixaban

On Thursday I experienced an horrific nose bleed - the blood flowed like a tap had been switched on. Had to send for ambulance and was taken to hospital - it did stop so no further investigation was carried out. I am now in a state of terror that it might happen again at any moment - and particularly afraid that I might be alone when it does, or out somewhere. Has anybody else had this experience? Any tips or advice would be really welcome. Thank you 🙏

Anticoagulants do no cause bleeding but may exacerbate an existing weakness. Maybe discuss with your GP for investigation.

Hi Faith

Yes, I've had the same horrible nose bleed as you but mine wouldn't stop pouring with blood and I had to keep having fresh kidney dishes as they quickly filled with blood. I had to have a huge bandage thing stuck up my nose and pumped up to put pressure on the spot. I was put on a drip as I'd lost so much blood. Then I spent a few days in hospital.

You feel so terribly vulnerable when something like this happens. I would rather give birth to my two daughters again than be a victim of an uncontrollable nose bleed. I have said that if it ever happens again rather than go through that fear again I'd shoot myself! I guess you understand that totally?

Thinking back I think my nose kept bleeding because my fear sent my blood pressure sky high. Next time I'd check it and then take another beta blocker. They wouldn't let me take my beta blockers in hospital.

I'll see if I can find my old post here as members were so helpful on there.

Tip: If blood pressure goes high take big breaths and then huff the breath out of your mouth as quickly as possible. Do this about 5 times then check your blood pressure again.

I've got a bleeding disorder, HHT, so it happens often. Sometimes three times per day and mine is mild. But if you have no reason you should get it checked by your GP.If you are still getting them come back to me and I'll share some tips as I'm quite the expert!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
