Ablation Update

Just thought I'd give some positive news 2 years after my cryo ablation at Wythenshawe. I've had no episodes of AF since then, and as write this I'm feeling fitter than I have in years. I do have the odd flutter, but I've never felt this would be a precursor for going into AF, as used to happen in the past. I'm 63 and decided after Christmas to up my cardio alongside the weight training I've been doing for years, so I now walk for at least half an hour 5 times a week on the treadmill. I'm following the zone 2 principle, so I achieve this by walking at around 4.5 km/HR on a 10% incline. I'm finding it easier week on week, so I'll just walk a bit longer if I want to increase the workload. I appreciate this won't be possible for many on here, but I'm just trying to give anyone waiting for an ablation the hope that it can be a resounding success.

That's so good to hear, long may it continue. We need to hear more success stories like yours. Thank you for reporting back after two years of being AF free. Jean

Thank you for your uplifting news. I’m still debating whether or not to ask for my name to go on the waiting list but reading about your success gives me the confidence to trust the expertise of my EP and go ahead with an ablation.

If it's any comfort to you, I'd have a second procedure if the need ever arises, such has been the improvement to my lifestyle. Nothing is guaranteed, but the constant worry of going into AF and the risks associated with it were worth it.

I am day 4 post ablation at Wythenshawe and very happy to hear of your successful procedure. I’ve been advised by cardiologist mine was a successful ablation but remain spectacle as I don’t feel as well as I thought I would. I know it’s very early days and I need to be patient but feel I’ve gone backwards with breathlessness and chest discomfort. You give me hope for the long term as I found the procedure, under local, unpleasant and really don’t want to repeat.

I was exactly the same post ablation, and it was several weeks before I started to feel normal again. Be patient, it will improve, but do take it easy for the first few weeks.

Great story, I would be over cautious and keep exercise well within capabilities rather than pushing too hard.

Zone 2 cardio means the heart is never pushed to it's limits, so I'm comfortable doing that.

Great to hear! I too had a cryo ablation along with valve repair in 2021 at mayo clinic in Rochester Minnesota. Other than some pacs and pvcs, no afib!

great news! I had my cryo ablation in 2021 mid Covid. I have had one brief episode each year since, very bearable, probably usually because I was physically and emotionally exhausted. Very pleased. Offered a touch up even for this load but I am opting watchful waiting

Going for mine on the 20th March. I'm currently at the gym twice a week, 20 mins on bike and 20 mins run(jog at about 8.5k speed). Also practise Wing Chun Kung Fu once or twice a week depending on time pressures. My thought is that this will get my heart in the best shape before the ablation, not sure if this is accurate but it helps me mentally anyway. Hope I can go back to this post ablation.

Good for you, the mental aspect of physical exercise is often overlooked in my opinion, if the body is up to it of course.
