Ablations

Hi Friends

I had my first AV node Ablation in January 2025. It was all straightforward but I have not been well since the treatment. It may be coincidental with Winter weather and perhaps my age beginning to count ( 86) What symptons have people had after their own ablation treatment. ( hardly an operation !) I need to understand so I can accept and deal with the situation

Thanks

Hi Brian, just to be clear, was that an ablation for AF? An AV node ablation is done after a pacemaker is fitted and is pretty final so not ‘first ablation’.

It would be helpful if you said in what way you have felt unwell. It’s not that long since you had it and many people find it takes months to recover. Have you read the leaflet? healthunlocked.com/afassoci...

Hi Buffafly

I do have a fitted pacemaker.

My cardiologist had recommended having the ablation to enable reduction of some of my six medications which had very debilitating side effects like fatigue ,confusion and disturbed sleep among others. It seemed a straightforward op. on the 14th Jan. but now after about a month I am even more tired than before and I am slower in getting organised for the day plus more forgetful though luckily in a safe way! ( so far).

I do not have any leaflets about the treatment nor was I given one ??

Buffafly,

As a postscript….My lack of appetite ( another side effect) seems worse which is not helping my energy levels obviously. If it does take months to recover ( from a so called simple procedure) ,at least I am aware of it now. Thanks for that . .

Click on the link on my reply above. I do not think you should be more tired than before in the long run but loss of appetite is serious and I would contact your GP as there are supplements you can be prescribed to keep you going when you are not eating a full diet. Best wishes ❤️‍🩹

PS I have checked your previous posts and what you had was a standard ablation which is not exactly a simple procedure for someone of your age in poor health. Lots of rest!!!

Thanks Buffafly. I can tell my fatigue is increased since the op. Sorry I bothered now. I am due for a new pacemaker and will push for an early date for renewal.

Thanks Buffafly. I have procured an appt for the 20/02 so I will put my questions to the cardiology nurse. I see the cardiologist 4 days later !! Lucky me !

Thanks for the reply. Will update people in due course .

When your AV node was ablated your pacemaker (presumably a 2 lead type) was enabled for full pacing. There are a variety of adjustments that the device team can make to its settings and it's worth telling them how you're feeling when you get your next check up to see if they can help.

Thank you Fred. Will do. I have a check up due later this month.

FYI, the AV node is only done one time to my best knowledge that’s why it’s a one time irreversible thing. It is the natural pacemaker and will no longer be able to cause damage because your pacemaker will be in charge. My pacemaker was done first the AV node two weeks later.

you just had surgery no one feels well after surgery. I don’t know if you have a pacemaker or why you got the AV node if you don’t have one. I don’t claim to know everything, but I have been pretty well schooled by my who is a teacher among other things at one of the best schools and hospitals in the country. FYI, it took me almost a year to really be healed. You notice I say healed. We are not cured. There is no cure. This is to prevent further heart damage, especially if you also have heart failure or anything else. A fib won’t kill you, but that’s not the only part of your heart. My heart has gotten stronger and healthier. My ejection rate went from to 70 which is a good number even for those without problems. My doctor is thrilled with all of my results. Valentine’s Day will be the second anniversary of all of this miracle happening.

you are always going to be able to feel flutter and a fib when it acts up the difference is it’s locked away and not damaging your heart anymore. The pacemaker is controlling your heartbeat now. I find a fib and flutter, annoying it doesn’t really hurt. It’s aggravating once in a while. I’ll get a hard thump but for the most part, it just makes me tired and tired of feeling it.

try to stay out of your head about it and don’t worry about every little thing you feel if it’s serious you will know it and head to the ER. I haven’t had to do that yet. I just roll with it. Even an ablation. the regular type usually takes several months. Your poor little needs to heal. It’s been traumatized. Think about any injury that you get even a cut finger. It hurts for a while, depending on what you did to it. So imagine how the is feeling. I think too many people concentrate on all of this too much. Also remember going forward. We have a lot of parts to our body. it’s not always the fault of the when you don’t feel well. It can be confusing and frustrating. I just got over something I have had since November it had nothing to do with my. Yes, it gave me a fib and flutter, but it wasn’t my. Something I have really discovered is the digestive system and how confusing that can be with your Sometimes I get spasms again. It’s not my heart. We have a big learning curve with this thing I’m still learning.

the best thing you can do for yourself is look really well at the sources you are reading the sheets that they have on here are awesome. All of us have different opinions because we are all different. I find most things on the Internet even from large hospital can be contradictory. The same with doctors depending on how long they have been doing things some are stuck on the old. I had a great one in Florida then I found one when I moved that pretty much I am convinced used me as a guinea pig with something he. it failed horribly. I almost died and he abandoned me not even a phone call. Then I was blessed with the most incredible doctor. The day I met him I had a list and he gave me answers before. I even asked him questions he talks to you not at you and explains in‘s terms. If you saw his résumé, you would be shocked at how humble he is and he is young.

my pacemaker was created just for me. I am known as unique with now they have made more but included an and I have had the same tech with since I left the OR that day. She had to speak to the engineer because she didn’t know anything about what I had. I don’t want anyone giving up because it’s incredible. What they can do now.

we have amazing people on here others who have had early use of things such as pulse and they were doing amazing. The last I knew. Someone recently contacted me just He recognized what I had. I think he has similar and he referred to it as the Rolls-Royce of pacemakers. I have an amazing app if anything happens my doctor knows before I do. I am 24 seven and they will do a major transmission the beginning of March. They do that every few months I don’t a thing I’m not even aware when they’re doing it

so it’s like when you have an upset stomach you know how if you lay there thinking about it you feel even worse. That’s how all of this is if you keep thinking about it. Please don’t let it take over your life according to my EP, the way that I am going now and with my pacemaker, there is nothing I can’t do that even people without a problem can do obviously I won’t be joining Cirque du Soleil anytime soon lol also think about your age and did you have other problems.?

you are going to be OK don’t let your head tell you otherwise not saying it’s gonna be overnight that connection is very real. I have triggers terrible one of them is lol but I anxiety is my biggest enemy. My EP is the one that picked up on that everything else is going well. A few months he had a yearly reading of my pacemaker/Monitor. I had been sure I had times. It was really bad in there. The charts told me different in my head. I had a different story. That’s what our nerves and emotions can do to us. My doctor is young and a little bit shy. However, every time I had a check up with him, I would get his shy smile. He would be so happy with what he was seeing. Until my pacemaker I spent over six months, unable to walk or even stand without tears when I left the hospital I was able to get into the car by myself, and the tears were replaced by a big smile. Take a deep breath you are surrounded by others on here. We are all family because of a fib. Keep away from the negative. kjv

Hi Dawn.I thought I had replied to you but cannot find it. Thank you for your comfortingvwords. I hope to have a new pacemaker soon as acreport from the hospital that did the procedure actually said the battery of the pacemaker was in its final days. They run flat out and then due unlike normal batteries More inducement to get me back to normal ! Thanknyou

that’s wonderful. I hope you get a Rolls-Royce lol from what I was told instead of just a battery change, they slip it out and just change your pacemaker. I don’t know what needs to be done to get one like mine because my leads are different I have three of them one is just hanging around for now. Also, I have HIS pace bundling. I don’t know if your leaves are compatible I tried getting into understanding the pace bundling stuff that’s where it gets really interesting but wow, I think I’ll leave that to the EP. lol. Please let me know how you’re doing. I have recently lost my incredible EP because he got an amazing position with a university Hart Hospital. He is now the chief of electrophysiology if I know him he he’s also still teaching. He is young and humble, and I think he will continue to climb in the medical world without even trying. He thinks outside the box he wants us better. He doesn’t want to repeat failing so much about him. If I sound like he’s up on a pedestal. He is with me because I am here because of him I believe. By the time I met him, I had heart failure on top of everything else. My heart failure has reversed from 40 ejection rate to 70, which is good. He told me even with people who have trouble at my age.

think positive and keep in touch

Thanks Dawn. The last pacemaker was replaced completely , not merely the battery and I hope for the same again. Ha , I remember being wheeled to the hospital exit after the fitting and spotting a friend coming to pick me up . I ran across the road to stop him paying a parking fee because I was already available. Then realised what I had done !!! Will update when I can

oh what a smile you just gave me and I thought I did good getting out of the wheelchair into the car. I look forward to hearing from you. Valentine’s Day was my second birthday. I call it my new heart. last year I was with my on that day so I told him and I you gonna sing happy birthday he is funny because he looks very serious and he’s fairly quiet. He chuckled a little bit and bent over and said happy birthday I wasn’t thinking about lt being awkward or thinking about the location lol.

try to behave yourself and not run around across the street without looking both ways this time OK lol🙀😂😂😂
