I was put on apixaban about a month ago in preparation for a cardioversion. I also take 10mg bisoporol and 125 micrograms digoxin. Diagnosed mid Nov. and have been in persistent AFib since end of November. About a week after starting apixaban blisters appeared on my toes, some clear some blood filled. Underneath, on top on the sides… and sometimes the itch really badly. I was hoping to go back to exercising but too painful! I saw a cardio nurse who said it is likely a very uncommon side effect and told me to avoid rubbing, knocking etc toes and wear wide shoes (I only ever wear trainers since I tore the right plantar plate (ligament holding second toe in place) some years back. Has anyone else had these? And does it get better? Cardioversion on 19 Feb, so holding out for that but cannot continue having these long term.

Apixaban and toe blisters?

Hi Purplekatt,
How awful this must be for you?
I don’t take Apixaban as l can’t tolerate the new DOAC’s I take warfarin, but if the cardio nurse said it was a common side effect, why on earth didn’t she advise changing to a different anticoagulant? I would insist on this, but maybe not until after your cardioversion on 19th Feb. I hope that goes ok for you and is a success.
Best of luck.
Christine
I think she said an "uncommon" side effect. In anycase, whatever, the bit of paper in the packet should have discussion points and advice on this particular issue.
I Googled apixaban and got this:
Blisters are a possible side effect of apixaban (Eliquis), a blood thinner. Other possible side effects include a rash, swelling, itching, and peeling.
Feel sorry for you, thank goodness your cardioversion is soon. Though I guess it will be a while after that before you can stop the drug.

hi. I have had this problem since Apixaban during the winter ( chilblanes ). I now only wear wool socks , or when out for a run two pairs of running socks. I also bought some really warm boots. Sheep skin slippers are also a life changer. I hope you manage to find some helpful tips
I walk 3.5 k a day with 2lb added weight on each ankle but have no problems, despite being 81. I use Strava to monitor my progress. I take the 5mg tablets of Apixaban. I wear running shoes for my walk,
All the best.
