I used to take rivaroxaban 2mgs per day, but after a big op for hallus vegus and straightening claw toes I had a bleed behind my kneecap. Came off all anticoags until my knee/leg subsided; that took 3 months before it felt & looked normal again. Now I am just taking 5mgs of Apixaban daily. I notice that when I swallow 1st thing in the morning it feels a bit like I have an airbubble. Then I continue to drink & it’s ok I do have a slight hiatus hernia so could be that. But, also I have sort of indigestion/wind a lot. It’s only since I’ve been taking the apixaban. Does anyone else get these symptoms?

Side effects of Apixaban?

Most of us who take anticoagulants tend to be on other medication such as betablockers and it’s very difficult sometimes, to know which is causing what! I have been taking Apixaban for around 4 years and I’m not aware of any side effects. Rarely, people mention hair loss but all the people I know who take it don’t have a problem.......
When I was started on NOACs I was also prescribed PPI's to help with any gastro issues. Not something that you want to be on long term though.
Your symptoms do remind me of when I had a hiatus hernia though
No I haven’t had any problems with Apixaban but I can have swallowing problems because of another condition and the meds I take can sometimes cause digestive problems so I was told to take my meds with a glutinous drink - I make my own milk kefir so take my tablets with that but something like a yogurt drink works just as well. If a med requires to be taken with water then I drink the water later.
What I have come to realise is not nearly enough is known how individuals metabolise various medication and so unless it is stated now to be taken with food - eg Flecainide - I tend to take all tablets with something and find it much easier on the stomach.
I found Apixaban worsened my digestion ( burping which is unusual for me) when I first started it in March but it seems to have settled down now.
That’s interesting because when I’ve looked on Google for side-effects with apixaban it doesn’t mention indigestion symptoms. Thank you
I haven't noticed any difference in anything since I started taking 5mg 2x day two years ago.
I started taking Apixaban early September and found after swallowing that it felt like a lump in my oesophagus. I drank more water too but it was still there. After a couple of weeks that all disappeared.
Yes same here trapped wind pain eases if I burp very ladylike but as if meds stick in throat !
