Palpitations

Hi all,

Last Tuesday I started with palpitations, nothing uncomfortable, just skipping a beat now & again, now it's Saturday & the palpitations are still there.

I'm on 2.5mg Bisoporal & have been told by my consultant, if I have anything that feels like another episode, take another tablet. I have been doing this, up to 3 a day & tge palpitations are still there.

Sometimes they are slow, sometimes the are fast & sometimes they are uncomfortable.

After nearly a week & getting a bit peeved off with it....

l had a run of palpitations and ectopic beats a few weeks ago, but they have now settled down and just disappeared. I did have stress at the time and lost a dear friend. The ectopics, for me, are worse than AF., but they can stop an attack of AF from happening. I have Bisoprolol as a pip, but found they didn’t help very much. I found the more l worried the worse they became, so if you can relax and do some deep breathing it is most beneficial. If you are worried l would see your GP before the holiday begins.

I started at the beginning of the year with Afib & started on bisoporal in May. I've had no episodes for 8 months, until the beginning of this week. Today hasn't been too bad, the odd palpitation. I relax & control my breathing, this does tend to stop them, but the come back after a short while. I'm not stressed, nothing is concerning me & am generally happy.

Mine started after a cessation of AF for 18 months. Difficult to understand if nothing has changed in your life, that’s why it’s easy to call it a monster! Get checked if you are concerned so that you can enjoy Christmas.

P.S. Make sure you are hydrated and your electrolytes are in sync. Hope they soon stop for you.

I drink a couple of litres of water & juice a day, but will definitely be looking a getting more electrolytes into my system. Cheers dude

Put some sugar and salt in your juice. Just a sprinkle. Milk and coconut water are full of electrolytes.

I bought some effervescent electrolytes tablets & they seem to be doing the trick. After starting to drink it, mixed with water, my heart feels like it's calming down. Thank you for the tip 😊

Hello - I think electrolyte balance is essential - anyone tried Hydro Electrolyte Effervescent Lemon 20 Tablets from H&B? Considering these instead of trying to maintain with a balanced diet.......any advise welcome!

Cavalierrubie profile image
Cavalierrubie in reply toJaneybur

l agree. Magnesium is essential and has helped lots with their ectopics. I have a Better You magnesium spray which is absorbed into the skin. You can get it on EBay.

I didn’t know Holland and Barratt do an electrolyte drink. Check ingredients to make sure no unwanted additives. They do online sales so very convenient. I have bought vitamins from them on line.

Can you share exactly which "effervescent electrolytes tablets" seem to be "doing the trick" for you? Thanks.

I found them in Asda at £8 a tube

I found these in B&M, £3 a tube

Thanks for the heads-up. I suppose at 40p a tablet they are not cheap, but the reviews are very positive. If they are good enough for the "Wales Deaf Rugby squad in argentina to win 2 x 7s World Cups", that's good enough for me. I'm off now to check your other suggestion (B&M?), but Phizz will be hard to beat.

LankyCoachMan profile image
LankyCoachMan in reply toozziebob

Yes, in B&M, on the isle where the protein supplements are

ozziebob profile image
ozziebob in reply toLankyCoachMan

I've managed to reach 78 without knowing what B&M is. Nor do I know what a sports rehydration supplement is or tastes like. I was given several free sample sports drinks when cycling through my local park, but they contained so much caffeine I couldn't try them. And my knowledge of the location of the protein supplements in supermarkets is also, not unsurprisingly, non existent.

Unfortunately I have mobility problems from childhood polio. I can now barely walk and certainly can't work up any kind of a sports caused electrolyte shortage. But I am periodically concerned about my electrolyte balance or not whenever my paroxysmal AF strikes, as most of us are. It's just I need to be careful re the extra ingredients in this type of rehydration/sports drink. Cost is really not my main concern. But I'm off now to check out your "cheaper" option, plus to investigate your "B&M", hoping it's not a subsidiary of "S&M".🤔

LankyCoachMan profile image
LankyCoachMan in reply toozziebob

B&M sell everything you could possibly want for everything you could need for everyday items. No, I don't work for them 😆 😂 I'm sure you'll find something in there you never realised you needed... Make sure to look at the packaging, all the products with caffeine, say it contains caffeine. Happy shopping...

ozziebob profile image
ozziebob in reply toLankyCoachMan

Oh yes, I remember now from TV adds. D-I-Y and home items, and now protein shakes and caffeine spikes! None close to me in London and never visited as I don't have a motor vehicle. What a restricted life I've had.😄

ebay.co.uk/itm/405379152123... link is for eBay, for the PHIZZ product. Of you don't have an eBay account, I'm sure a family member or friend could have one & be able to order for you?

Organic coconut water might suit you then Bob. Good for electrolytes and clean of additives. Try an organic supply store online.

ozziebob profile image
ozziebob in reply toSingwell

Yes, thanks for your suggestion which does respect my mobility concerns in relation to most of these rehydration products. Organic coconut water and organic milk are probably best for me. But it's difficult to have expensive organic coconut water (with it's short shelf life) on standby for when AF strikes, whereas I always will have organic milk in my fridge. So I'm effectively reduced to a choice of one.

With the Phizz 3 in 1, I was attracted to all the additional vitamins and minerals but then I read the ingredients:

Glucose (Sugar), Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Magnesium Citrate, Malic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Salts (Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride), Blackcurrant Flavour, Apple Flavour, Calcium-D-Pantothenate, Sucralose (Sweetener), Niacinamide, Colouring Agents (Red Cabbage Extract, Beetroot Powder), Cyanocobalamin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Acetate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Gluconate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Manganese Sulphate, Retinyl Acetate, Riboflavin-5-Phosphate, Folic Acid, Biotin

A bit scary that, although, positively, it is caffeine free. But I will probably give it a "swerve". Mind you, my "swerve" is not like it was in my younger days.🤔😄

The more expensive (@£5 for 750ml) Rebel Kitchen Raw Organic Coconut Water is the only one I occasionally buy. No additives. Lovely stuff. Highly recommended. Unopened shelf life 2 weeks, consume within 24 hours after opening.

We use the High5 no-sugar fizzy tablets, which dissolve well and come in a variety of flavours. (At home, I mostly use an electrolyte powder, from the Bulk brand, but it's messy for travel and white powder scares security guards.)

Try and notice any pattern to them, for example, are they worse at night, after a big meal, after exercise as your heart slows, or during exercise or wirh stress. If any of the first three, it's possible you have a vagal pattern, in which case beta blockers (Bisoprolol) can actually make then worse.

LankyCoachMan profile image
LankyCoachMan in reply toCliff_G

Usually they stop at night & when I'm asleep. They start again after I've woken up. I find they slow down after food, but then start again shortly after I've eaten or had a drink.

Cliff_G profile image
Cliff_G in reply toLankyCoachMan

Ok, so more probably the opposite of vagal, i.e adrenergic, and the BBs should help. Nice awareness!

Please be careful self dosing with Bisoporal, the top dose is 10 and by taking 3 x 2.5 you are almost there, best to return to your medic for advice rather than keep raising your dosage. Good luck x

LankyCoachMan profile image
LankyCoachMan in reply toopal11uk

I was advised by my consultant to take extra if I felt I had an episode happening. I definitely won't be taking any more than I should be, the 3 x 2.5mg in one day was a one off.

These sound like ectopic beats (PACs most likely, but perhaps PVCs). They are "premature" beats that arise somewhere other than the proper place in the atrium's SA node and give the sense of a fast beat. They can be followed by a pause, however (a "compensatory pause") and this can give the sense of a slow beat. They are said to be harmless or "benign" since, unlike AF they don't cause blood clots to form. I get so many on some days that I couldn't possibly count them. They are, in their way, more uncomfortable than my AF thanks to the "thump" feeling that accompanies them.

If you have an ECG device like an Apple Watch, you can easily catch them. I attach a strip from my watch to show them. Notice that unlike AF there is a tiny blip (the "P" wave) before the big one (the ventricular contraction or "R" wave) to show these are not AF as the blip is the SA node firing (I shall send a second post with AF to show the lack of P wave as only one image is allowed in each).

Bisoprolol just reduces your heart rate and does nothing for the irregularity- Flecainide does that and taken when you feel your heart going crazy, it settles things in a few hours.

Cavalierrubie profile image
Cavalierrubie in reply toVonnegut

Bisoprolol helps to stop fast AF by reducing HR and BP. It works for me as a PIP. As it has been said a thousand times “We are all different.” 😂😂

Happy Christmas to you too!

My husband looks after me as there’s no way I can manage much myself with the chronic fatigue. Last week we went to a local pub to sing the old carols in parts as we’ve done for years. It’s great but as I’m still recovering from the exertions, he’s gone with our daughter today, as she is visiting and enjoys the singing too.

Cavalierrubie profile image
Cavalierrubie in reply toVonnegut

The singing sounds lovely. I get that fatigue at times and it takes a few days to get over. Just might be something to do with AF. 😒 Happy Christmas to your husband, head cook and bottle washer and a wonderful blessing to you.

Vonnegut profile image
Vonnegut in reply toCavalierrubie

I developed chronic fatigue at around the same time as the PAF after around 75 years of active healthy life! I had an episode of shingles when the excruciating pain came before the rash and I couldn’t get an appointment at our surgery for nearly two weeks by which time the pain had gone and the rash had appeared and I wasn’t offered an antiviral! I’ve made it to 80 (81 next month) and brain still works ok. The Flecainide might add to the fatigue but it keeps my heart in order. Phew!

Ginny_Ickle profile image
Ginny_Ickle in reply toVonnegut

Shingles is terrible. I hope you've now had the vaccine.

Vonnegut profile image
Vonnegut in reply toGinny_Ickle

Yes. It’s not like other vaccines- it just stops episodes you might get being bad. I had been told by a pain specialist that the weird pain I had in my back was “the after effects of shingles” even though I had not been aware I’d had it, so when the “vaccine” was first offered I asked if I should still have it but did not get a reply! How I wish I’d had it that first time and thus avoided my chronic fatigue and this heart thing. Even though that is controlled well by the Flecainide I take, it might add to the fatigue! Fortunately, my brain still works ok! Losing that must be the worst thing!
