Sending good thoughts and hope everybody is safe during this nasty storm. Not quite as bad as 87 but I think we now have an ex greenhouse judging by the noises from that direction. Got plenty of candles and fire wood to hand and at least the (gas ) AGA can't go out so we can eat!

Stay home and warm all.

Have been thinking of you down there Bob. Glad you are ok and hope Jean is too. We are ok here in East Anglia (at the moment). Had a fence down the last storm. I live near some large trees though which have a preservation order on them. Have been petitioning to get them down for couple years, without any luck as yet. We seem to be getting more and more of these storms and floods. Snow next week, they say. Terrible for those in Wales and on the west coast, must be awful for them to cope. Stay safe everyone.

You’ve got it bad there in the north of the county Bob, take care and stay indoors til it’s abated. Hope the greenhouse is salvageable!

Good luck Bob! We lost almost all our greenhouse glass last winter in a storm so this year we've taken out the top row on both sides hoping the wind will blow straight through 🤞.

It's not due here until later. The Christmas market has been dismantled and the big wheel taken away, such a shame for the stall holders and families who were looking forward to visiting this weekend. Nothing you can do about it though.

Not too bad here Could be worse but not good. Have been indoors. The walled garden keeps us sheltered to a certain extent,

You have not heard from me for quite a while because my husband of 56 years died in October. It was all absolutely ghastly and my BP has been up for ages.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband, this is a terrible time for you especially when you were together for so many years. You will have many memories to look back on when you are feeling stronger. X

Thank you. Have not come to terms with it or its implications yet. Family all pulling together and very supportive so I am lucky in that respect.

G'day Bob,

All okay down 'ere, the pointy end of Cornwall ... just been out to get my 'Click and Collect' groceries at ASDA Hayle .... quite windy, but have known it worse even during a summer storm. That said, I'm glad I've retired for ever from bus driving, it's a bit challenging with a double decker in such winds.

Stay safe guys and gals.

North Cornwall hasn't got off so lightly! Sustained winds of 88mph with gusts up to 111mph recorded by NCI at Stepper point. Slates flying off roofs, whole roofs, fences, trees, sheds, greenhouses, doors blown off and multiple road blockages.

Power off 10.30am Saturday to 6.00pm Sunday (fingers crossed) thankfully have an oil aga, candles and a power pack.

Stay safe everyone.

BenHall1 profile image
BenHall1 in reply toCat04

Hiya Cat,

So sorry to read of your drama up in North Cornwall. down here in Hayle we certainly haven't had anything more than a dramatic summer storm. I think the thing is down 'ere at the pointy end ........ storms gather intensity racing across the north Atlantic and Celtic sea that when they make landfall, hitting the land mass lifts them up real high and sends them, over the land, then there is the warmth of the landmass to consider ... and then the storms dump their energy over the coast and inland causing the havoc they do as they move further and further inland. Its the lift of the storms when they make landfall that makes us immune to real damage.

Yeah we get trees down, some local back roads ( rat runs ) get blocked with local flooding, mostly because local farmers don't maintain their drainage ditches, so water sweeps over farmland and dumps shedloads of mud on roads. We had a power cut last week for a day but nothing to do with weather, just electricty equipment in sub station problems.

Matter of interest , what power pack do you have ?

The wind has died right down now, our cat now ventures outside ...... but doesn't stay out long.

Try and stay safe guys and gals.

John

John, our cat Pete didn't go out for nearly 20 hours. Must have a bladder the size of Devon! When he did venture out he was back in two minutes.

😂😂😂😂 that must be all part of the make up of cats Bob. We always leave a clean tray for Dotty, if desperate she will use it but she does prefer to go outside.

Fortunately I moved my car before the slates descended from the roof to where it had been parked. Previous storms have told me to move it as one year I had to have extensive repairs to the dents & paintwork damage.

Have two power-packs but just need the first one of these to keep everything going as power still off

Hi Cat04

Thank you for that. I think I shall investigate. Just because we've been lucky so far with our power ...we still got the rest of winter to go ...and anything can happen 😱😱. Well done you for moving your car.

Thank you again.

Still going on and off again today, Monday, but some properties near here haven't had any since Saturday morning 😒 at least I can do top-ups whilst it is on 😊 Insurance claim going in to cover the damage and National grid have offered to pay for hot food.

Thanking you for your kind thoughts Bob. Are you in the red area or just underneath where it's going to hit? The wind is wild here in the South of the county and my large back window is making a slight creaking noise, like it's never done before! Its when the wind gusts that it's most dramatic.

Take care and don't go out.

Jean

BobD profile image

Pretty bad Jean. Three power cuts over night and most of the roof of the greeen house gone. Part of our hedge is hanging over the lane, one shed up top of garden collapsed but expected that. The wind is so dirty as well. Looks like all our windows are frosted glass! Probably salt spray from the sea even though it is five miles away. Sam just made another batch of mince pies.

jeanjeannie50 profile image

You poor thing. A few things in my garden have blown over that's all, sounds like you have been hit worse. No power cuts here.

Take care.

It's still pretty rough here in South Wales, earlier every road into the town was affected by fallen trees, the town centre is still shut off by police because an electricity cable has come down in the middle of the main shopping street. Our Christmas carnival parade and fireworks display has been cancelled for the first time in its existence.

Paulbounce profile image

Hi HUC

It's very windy here in Staffs. Cold and wet. There was a Victorian craft fair I was going to but that was cancelled. I feel sorry for the stall holders - They could have done well with the build-up to Christmas.

I'm not going out tonight and now sitting in a nice warm living room with the heating turned up. It makes you think about people who live in countries with far worse weather conditions than the UK has today. What they have to endure puts our bad weather into perspective somewhat.

Thank you Bob. Has been windy here in West Yorkshire but not too bad. Incessant rain and roads flooded. Being at the end of a valley we can be sheltered or get the full force. Rain though can cause many problems as it runs off of the moors and straight down to us. That being said we have been very lucky this time compared to many other places. No mince pies but cake all marzipanned .

Hi

Reading all about you lot. Keep safe and warm.

I wonder if it's the same storm which is going to hit our South Island!

They have a RED Alert.

I'm 2 hours from Cape Reinga at the top of NZ. I might see the sea bubbling a storm though.

Thank you for your kind thoughts . It’s been really bad here in Wales , fortunately I’m away from the river. We did have power cuts yesterday. I feel for the families living by the river, they have to face flooding most years. There’s no chance of insurance or selling the properties. Keep safe everyone and have A Happy Christmas.

Thank you Bob,

it wasn’t too bad here in Morpeth Northumberland. Yes, the rain was torrential to the extent they closed the flood gates and flood warnings went out. The wind was strong but nothing compared to down South. I think a few trampolines and fences may have gone, however, I think we’ve been lucky. It’s still raining, a bit blowy no power cuts, thank goodness as I’m all electric.

Stay safe Bob and folks.

john-boy-92 profile image
john-boy-92

Thanks Bob. You had it worse in Devon than we did close to Bristol and the Bristol Channel. We were forecast for winds of 80 to 90 mph, but our peak gust was 40mph from the north-west, according to our weather station. Fortunately, we have reasonable shelter from winds in that quarter.

Qualipop profile image

We were very lucky. We got an amber warning but only one evening of st ong winds

Vonnegut profile image

It sounded pretty nasty here but I think our outbuildings have survived though a tree fell on the chicken run and my husband hurt his back dealing with that. Our electricity might have gone off in the night briefly but nothing like as bad as the lightning a little while ago. I am on some special “vulnerable” list so we are supposed to get special attention from the national grid and water guys.,

Just spent the morning picking up broken glass around the greenhouse. 10x 2' by 2' panes gone including the door but the majority (its a 12 x6) are still OK . At least the part where my logs are stored is OK. Last night Son and OH heard a loud bang and this morning the local NEXT store has no roof! Calm(ish) and sunny this morning.

I nearly posted about this yesterday- reminding all of us AFibbers not to push ourselves out there against a high wind force and windchill...And then the fence started waving in the breeze! Out in the eye of the storm here in midwales, assisting husband by holding planks while he drilled, and carrying large stones to push up against the bottom of the fence 😞.

It worked so far.

Moving slowly was my strategy - having had AF triggered in the past by charging around in similar conditions.

It worked so far.

We consoled ourselves last night by watching a TV documentary about the Winter of 1947.

FancyPants54 profile image

It was very rough out there! I don't think we've suffered any damage, but it was very noisy and alarming.

Hope you are not left retrieving bits of greenhouse from the neighbours for weeks to come. The weather has been appalling so far this winter. So wet and so windy and snow and... I'm trying to set mum up with a private carer to shower her so I don't have to. But the poor woman and her carers are all operating rurally and are having a right time of it. Can't actually get to see mum to start the ball rolling. We are currently cut off from Banbury by a large sink hole that opened up in the A361. Roll on spring.
