bleeding in one eye

Last night I noticed blood in the white of my right eye. This morning, when I woke up, I’d forgotten about it and rubbed my eye because it was itching and it seems more red than it was yesterday. It’s just on the side nearest to my nose. I’m on Edoxaban. Has anyone had this happen to them. ? Do I need to worry about it or do I need to see anyone about it.? Is there any advice you can give me please.?

Quite common, there's a technical term for it which I've forgotten. I get this from time to time, and I'm on warfarin. I did see a doctor about it when I first had one and was concerned, but the doctor said it was common and nothing to worry about. It subsided over a couple of days. The small blood vessels can get damaged and cause the slight leakage of blood, but it does disperse.

Have a look on the NHS website under A-Z for "red eye".

Thank you, good to know, I’m probably worrying over nothing. Looks horrible though. I’m sure people will notice it when I go out shopping this afternoon and when I go out tonight. !!! When did yours get better?

Mine took about 5 days overall, the first time. Had one the other week, 2 days.

Thanks, hopefully, I won’t look like something from a Dracula movie for very long then. 😱

It does look awful doesn't it , first few times I woke up like that I was shocked.Little blood vessels can do this often but it can happen more often and feel or look worse if you take an anticoagulant.

Try not to rub your eyes but put a cool or Luke warm damp cloth over your eyes for relief.

Drink more fluids generally as this helps reduce his dry your eyes get and can help prevent you getting the red eye in the first place.

You can get some Gel tears or Carmellose drops for a few days to soothe the eyes as they heal. You can buy them at the chemist it's what the GP will also prescribe for people with this issue.

If you use drops do one eye at a time , lean back your head gently , put them in the middle of the eye, don't lean forward. Close the eyelids gently and move your eyes from side to side for 30 seconds before you lean forward and open your eye again. This means the drops have chance to fully lubricate your eye rather than dropping down your cheeks or just going down your tear duct.

Thanks for all your helpful information, I’ll see how it looks tomorrow and go to the chemist, if necessary.I’ll try not to rub my eyes again, if it’s going to start causing this.!!

Subconjunctival haemorrhage. Usually completely harmless but looks scarey. Take care 🦊x

Thanks. I gathered that. I found some pictures on Google, that looked like my eye does and that’s what it said it was, Hopefully it’ll go soon.

I was told the only time to worry was if both eyes were affected, and if it lasted more than 2 weeks

Sixtychick profile image

Thank you. That’s good to know. Hopefully this won’t last that long.!

Porageface profile image

Yes, I have. I went the same day to my optician who confirmed it was a sub conjunctival haemorrhage after examining the back of my eyes. I take Apixaban. I’m afraid I can’t remember whether he said to stop this for a few days.

I believe these are common even in people who don’t take anticoagulants

Thanks. Reassuring. Doesn’t look very nice, but I can’t hide myself away till it goes. !! How long did yours last for?

I went out shopping in the afternoon yesterday and didn’t get any funny looks.🤣 and went to my WI meeting last night and a few people said they’d had that happen to them. You’re just so conscious of it. I feel I look like an extra in a Dracula movie.😂😂

l take warfarin and have had quite a lot of bloodshot eyes, both eyes at once as well. Went to GP but nothing to worry about, I think our eyes get more fragile as we get older. I am always careful not to rub my eyes. It just fades in time, so nothing to worry about. The only time l would be concerned with my eyes is if my vision was affected or any pain.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toCavalierrubie

Thanks. Luckily, no pain or sight problems. I shall try not to rub my eyes in future.!!

gladliz profile image
gladliz in reply toCavalierrubie

Yes my optician said the same, unsightly, excuse pun, but harmless unless it affects your vision. Usually the first I know about it is when someone says 'Whatever is the matter with your eye'?

Sixtychick profile image

It’s still there this morning, but I don’t think it’s quite so red.

Probably read the paper in the packet under various levels of side effects. This should give you info on what to do also. You don't say what your dose is and thebtiming of your doses. For a quick answer mighg be wise to speak to a pharmacist.

I am on the lower dose of edoxaban of 30 mg in the evening, after my dinner.

I experience what is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage now and then, and I’m taking apixaban, which is also a DOAC. During my annual eye exam with my ophthalmologist, I happened to have one of these "red eyes" at the time. She mentioned that being on an anticoagulant can cause this in some people (though not everyone) and said there’s no need to worry. However, she also advised me to seek medical attention if I experience any blurring or vision loss. While it might appear alarming, it's generally harmless and will resolve over time.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toFraserB

Thanks for that. Very reassuring. If I hadn’t looked in the mirror, I wouldn’t have known, as I have no vision problems or pain.

FraserB profile image
FraserB in reply toSixtychick

Yes, that's also how I discovered mine by looking in the mirror. I didn't have any pain either and my vision was okay. I also remember the opthamologist saying that even those who aren't on any medications can also get them. It's very common. They can sneeze or cough too hard as well as strain to lift something heavy. Your rubbing your eye probably just set it off again which as mentioned looks frightening but is harmless.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toFraserB

Thanks . Reassuring. It seems very common. Just never had it happen to me before and seeing it, made me a bit worried. It looks much worse than it is.!!

wilsond profile image

Yes,alarming but benign! Another weird thing to occur! Xx

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply towilsond

I thought it might have been the anticoagulant, but it seems it happens to people who aren’t on one as well. I won’t rub my eyes hard again now. Think that’s what caused it.

I had this several years ago, it was a small vein which had ruptured and I don't think its uncommon, however I have also had Herpes D in an eye and that is certainly not a nice thing to have, and its very very painful, red and sore so much so you feel as if you want to rip your eye out. This was diagnosed by an optician, I was sent to the hospital specialist immediately and meds started. So, my message would be, have an Optician check it out, they can see what is going on (easier appointment than a GP) and take it from there. Would add to this that if it is a small vessel there usually is nothing to worry about, you can get this by sneezing the fact we are on anticoags makes us worry. and you could always give a nurse practitioner or a pharmacist a ring straightaway and ask the question to reassure you.

Tellingfibs profile image

I had this but it was found to be very 'dry eye'. The optician gave me advice. It happens from time to time and I have Blepharitis too. I feel pretty sure these problems started at the same time I was diagnosed with afib and put on Warfarin and Bisoprolol. Since then my skin is also drier. The itchyness you mention makes me wonder, so if it hasnt cjeared in a couple of days, consult your optician. Dont bother with a GP because they either wont really know, or they will send you to an optician anyway. However, it may just be that you had 'sleep' in your eye and rubbing it caused the redness. Hoping it resolves soon.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toMaryCa

Thanks. Was wondering how long it’ll last for. I braved my WI meeting last night, even though I felt I looked like something out of a Dracula movie.🤣 and quite a few of the members there, said they’d had them. It seems to be quite common.

MaryCa profile image

My second one was the first day of hols in Lanzarote. I think that one was related to being late with Xarelto the day before and early that day. If you ever get flickery vision, as in it feels like, your peripheral vision on one side you feel like you can see flashing lights, that's different, that needs to be checked immediately. I had it over Christmas and went around turning off Christmas flashing lights outside to see if that's what it was. Nope. No difference. Optician told me next time, if there is a next time, move my rear to the hospital.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toMaryCa

Thanks. Bit annoying to get that on holiday. I have no vision problems at all or any pain. Only knew I had it because I could see it in the mirror. Hopefully it’ll fade soon.

riverside22 profile image

I had one in September, weirdly at the same time I had flashing at the side of my eye and a big floater, so I've at last got an appontment (today), if there aren't other symptoms they say a subconjunctival hemorrhage is usually benign, (I've had them before with no issues) I'm on Edoxaban too.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toriverside22

I’ve no vision problems at all. Dare not rub my eyes anymore now. Think that’s what caused it to happen.

Don’t take chances with your eyes book an appointment with Optician who can check the back of the eye.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toRosiemycat

Thanks. Will give it a few days. I’ve not got any vision problems and I’ve googled it and seen a few pictures of what mine looks like. I think it’s a a burst blood vessel called a subconjunctival hemorrhage, which is nothing to worry about.I have an appointment coming up for my 2 yearly eye test anyway, so will ask about it then.

I’ve had this happen to me several times. I’m on Warfarin. First time it happened I went to my optician to get it checked out but he said it’s a common thing and my blood thinner wouldn’t have caused it but not helped and not to worry. I looked a mess for 2/3 days but the thing to note is that my vision was normal. I’ve also had a bleed at the back of my eye which was totally different as the white of the eye didn’t go red but my vision was full of red dots and lines, if that happens you need to go to the doctors or optician immediately.

The same thing everyone else says. They are quite common and harmless. I got them before l was on an anticoagulant.

Yes I’ve had this. I think it’s probably worse because of the anticoagulant but the only problem is how horrendous it looks! The optician confirmed it’s no cause for concern.

Had a total red out of white of the eye bleed after 2nd jabba in 2021, also had bleeds in one ear twice a month later. Was on Rivaroxaban but never had bleeds or nosebleeds before (71) years old. Specsavers confirmedburst blood vessel and it cleared in 5 days. No vision problems or they would have investigated further. Eye problems increasing due to jabba açording to experts at FLCCC and dr petermccullough. Inform yourselves all is not as it is made out to be. Best of luck.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toAfperic

It’s nothing to do with that. Not had a jab one since last Autumn. I’ve never had a problem with my eyes like that before. Think it’s because I rubbed my eye too hard.

Last year my husband woke one morning with both eyes bright red. Neither his optician or GP was concerned and it disappeared in a couple of days. He was taking no tablets that cold have caused it, only his diabetes meds.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toQualipop

Glad mine was only in one eye. It looked bad enough. Your husband’s eyes must have looked awful. Don’t think I could have gone out if it had looked like that in both eyes. Still there today. Maybe not quite as bright red though.

It did look horrible but we've had worse. One time the dog jumped onto my mum's bed, pawed at her and stuck her needle sharp dew claw right into mum's eye. Amazingly the hole sealed immediately and it took about 5 days for the blood to disperse. Absolutely no damage caused

Iv had this a few times, I'm on warfarin mine was completely red , I think blood vessels broke through rubbing eye in my sleep due to blepharitis , maybe a finger prick test to check INR ? ASAP

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply toPICCASO

Thanks, I think it’s because I rubbed my eye too hard and caused a blood vessel to burst. I’m on Edoxaban 30 mg and I don’t usually have any problems with excessive bleeding, when I’ve had teeth out or blood tests done or I’ve cut myself. It just takes a bit longer to stop. I don’t think it’s the anti- coagulant. If it doesn’t go in a week, I’ll get it looked at. I’m not having any problems with it. It just doesn’t look very nice.
