Thank goodness the clot was found! Warfarin has a completely different mechanism of action to Apixaban which reduces the risk of clotting at a much earlier stage than Warfarin but all prophylactic medications such as anticoagulants only ever reduce the risk, there are no absolutes.
I presume that they did a TOE (trans oesophageal echocardiogram) before the procedure in order to find the clot so pretty lucky there I think. TOE normally only done if there have been gaps in anticoagulation in the month leading up to the ablation. Well done your team.
What a frightful experience for you? You were certainly in the right place, at the right time and with brilliant surgeons. Everyone’s nightmare l think, but so glad that you are safe and being cared for. Hope everything works out in your future treatment and it is a success.
I am no expert on anti-coags having only just started on them. However, I understand their effectiveness is only around 75%, the dose is I believe according to weight and over efficient kidneys can clear the dose too quickly leaving you less protected; however as Apixaban is taken twice a day the latter point is probably less relevant to you compared to others on once a day ones eg Edoxaban.
can I ask you if you had any symptoms indicating the clot, I asked my cardiologist if it was possible there were any clots hanging around in my heart that I didn’t know about and that could cause issues, he said no because if I had a clot I would be in pain?
hi there. I’ve been on warfarin for a few years now as I have a mechanical valve. A pretty complex heart history which I’ll let you read in my bio if you wanted to. However, Initially, I was adversed to having a mechanical valve due to warfarin and thought it would badly affect my life. By the time they did the valve the next time, I had no choice. Actually, it makes little difference. I have a machine to test my INR ( as I will be on warfarin for life) and text my GP with the results. Food and drink actually don’t affect me that much although often other medication, such as antibiotics, have more of a reaction. I would have no issues with saying to anyone to not be too concerned about warfarin. It’s not the horror drug I thought it would be…..although to be fair, I didn’t have a choice in whether I took it or not! Hope all goes well for you and please feel free to message if you want
